.TS file recorded with STB - won´t play

Postby aitte » 02 Sep 2016 22:30

Hi @all,

i´m not sure if this board is the right place. It´s the official VLC board isnt it?

VLC can play a lot formats "out of the box" with no special settings - no question.

But i bought a new DVB-S(2) receiver.
This one recordes x.ts files too, like the old one. But i´m not able to play them with VLC 2.24. :(
AVIdemuxer does, but that´s NOT a 100% usable player:

So where can i upload a small original file from this STB, so the bug or whatever it is for further investigations by some who has more knowledge than me.

bye aitte

P.S. MX Player (Android) does play this files

I play .ts files all the time with VLC, does it even open them?
If so, what is the error message?

the VLC just do nothing. Just show the VLC logo

It´s regardless if i open the files by doubleclick or drag and drop.

Other Ts files from the old DVB-S just play automatically

so where can i upload an example of such a ts file recorded by my new DVB-S?
by the way it´s this one http://www.strong.tv/en/products/high-d ... rs/srt7004

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=57724&p=193335#p193335
50 MB max should be enough.

First of all thank you for your reply
the error message only says
core info: stopping playback that´s all

and here is a sample without any editing http://www43.zippyshare.com/v/j1yc2Xfb/file.html
just what i get with the STB mentioned above.

I think your issue is similar/related to the one I have reported in this forum under the thread "Windows VLC player unable to play (.TSV) file".
In my case it appears if there might be a lot of "garbage" inside the video (.ts) file which is confusing VLC Player.

I tried processing your file through ffmpeg ( >ffmpeg -i out.ts -c: copy out_ffmpeg.ts ) and the resulting file (out_ffmpeg.ts) is played correctly by vlcplayer.
I had previously tried the same method with a video file created by a PVR (Aldi/Bauhm TV), which VLC player refused to play.
The file, after processing (copy streams) through ffmpeg, was smaller (about 400Mb in 2,200Mb) and played properly with VLC player.

Joe.

@jm3767: you are right. Filtering with ffmpeg cleans the file. But this is not sufficient because at the end I intend to use VLC to steam from a life source providing this stream (DVB-C live TV channel from VDR with streamdev-server plugin). VLC has my favourite channels in the playlist and shall work without additional filtering in between. Strange is, that a lot of channels from my cable supplier work well with VLC, but some are poisoned...

I checked the TS packtets with DVBinspector. In my file the first 889 TS packets are marked to be scrambled: hex 470090dd.... Afterwards the packets are not marked to be scrambled: 4700901e... After filtering with ffmpeg no scrambled packets can be found.

Is this an issue for VLC?

Cheers

OK, scrambled packtets do not seem to be the root cause. When I cut away this packets the file is still not played in VLC.

I made a comparison before/after filtering with ffmpeg.

The original file has only 4 PIDs:
  • 0x00: PAT
  • 0x90: the video stream
  • 0x9b: the 1st audio stream
  • 0x9c: the 2nd audio stream
Since there is no SDT the 3 streams are not identified by DVBInspector and the description is only "?".

The PES header for the video stream looks like this:

Code: Select all

stream_id: 0xE0 (224) => ITU-T Rec. H.262 | ISO/IEC 13818-2 or ISO/IEC 11172-2 or ISO/IEC 14496-2 video stream number 0 PES_packet_length: 0x0 (0) markerBits: 0x2 (2) pes_scrambling_control: 0x0 (0) => Not scrambled pes_priority: 0x0 (0) => normal data_alignment_indicator: 0x1 (1) => PES packet header is immediately followed by the video start code or audio syncword indicated in the data_stream_alignment_descriptor copyright: 0x0 (0) => not defined whether the material is protected by copyright original_or_copy: 0x0 (0) => contents of the associated PES packet payload is a copy pts_dts_flags: 0x3 (3) => both the PTS fields and DTS fields shall be present in the PES packet header escr_flag: 0x0 (0) => no ESCR fields are present es_rate_flag: 0x1 (1) => ES_rate field is present dsm_trick_mode_flag: 0x0 (0) => 8-bit trick mode field is not present additional_copy_info_flag: 0x0 (0) => additional_copy_info field is not present pes_crc_flag: 0x0 (0) => CRC field is not present pes_extension_flag: 0x0 (0) => extension field is not present pes_header_data_length: 0xD (13) pts: 0x19EBEAD62 (6958263650) => 21:28:34.0405 dts: 0x19EBE9F52 (6958260050) => 21:28:34.0005
After filtering with ffmpeg I have:
  • 0x00: PAT
  • 0x11: SDT/BAT
  • 0x100: the video stream
  • 0x101: the 1st audio stream
  • 0x102: the 2nd audio stream
  • 0x1000: PMT
Therefore some additional tables and the video audio PIDs are renumbered.

The PES header for the video stream looks like this:

Code: Select all

stream_id: 0xE0 (224) => ITU-T Rec. H.262 | ISO/IEC 13818-2 or ISO/IEC 11172-2 or ISO/IEC 14496-2 video stream number 0 PES_packet_length: 0x0 (0) markerBits: 0x2 (2) pes_scrambling_control: 0x0 (0) => Not scrambled pes_priority: 0x0 (0) => normal data_alignment_indicator: 0x0 (0) => alignment not defined copyright: 0x0 (0) => not defined whether the material is protected by copyright original_or_copy: 0x0 (0) => contents of the associated PES packet payload is a copy pts_dts_flags: 0x3 (3) => both the PTS fields and DTS fields shall be present in the PES packet header escr_flag: 0x0 (0) => no ESCR fields are present es_rate_flag: 0x0 (0) => no ES_rate field is present dsm_trick_mode_flag: 0x0 (0) => 8-bit trick mode field is not present additional_copy_info_flag: 0x0 (0) => additional_copy_info field is not present pes_crc_flag: 0x0 (0) => CRC field is not present pes_extension_flag: 0x0 (0) => extension field is not present pes_header_data_length: 0xA (10) pts: 0x37EE7 (229095) => 0:00:02.5455 dts: 0x370D7 (225495) => 0:00:02.5055
Can anyone spot anything relevant?

Next finding: from the ffmpeg filtered stream I removed the PMT or PAT packets (PIDs 0x00 or 0x1000). VLC was not anymore able to play the stream. Other viewers can play "dumb" streams with just the video and audio PIDs. VLC seem to need the PMT. I can cut away the SDT/BAT and VLC is still able to play it. But the PAT/PMT seems to be essential for VLC.

On this strange channel my cable provider does not seem to send PMTs at all. Therefore VLC is not able to play it. Other players: no problem.

Re: .TS file recorded with STB - won´t play

Solution found: start VLC with --demux option:

/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC --demux ffmpeg

Or for Windows see https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 11#p300811

@Xcoder

excellent work!
for the windows user

C:\Path\to\VLC.exe --demux ffmpeg

This should be done automatically by the VLC itself -> so for me it´s a little bug!
just my 2 cents
