Using VLC as a converter

I read somewhere that VLC Player could be used to convert from one format to another. Is that possible?

Start vlc, then CTRL+R - this will open a dialog to convert a video

Convert from the Media menu. Click on the Media menu in VLC, and then click on Convert / Save.
Select video(s) to convert. ...
Select the file name for the converted video. ...
Select video format for the conversion. ...
Advanced Settings (Optional) ...
Conversion: Videos saved in the target format.
