Snapshot feature broken (no PNG support) in 0.8.4?

Postby aHorseofCourse » 27 Nov 2005 23:54

Hi guys,
Looks like PNG snapshot support has gone missing in 0.8.4.
Here's the error I get:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg: cannot find encoder PNG Image main: no suitable encoder module for fourcc `png '. VLC probably does not support this image format. main: could not create snapshot /Users/Andrew/Desktop/vlcsnap-6696086.png
Switching to JPG works fine.
Didn't have a problem with PNG snapshots in 0.8.4-test2.

Switching to JPG may work fine, but the image becomes degraded slightly. Can we please have PNG support back?

Yes, please. I'd much rather have PNG support back.

I confirm that the png-encoder isn't included within the final build of 0.8.4. I'm currently checking why and hope to commit a fix soon.

Well, it isn't actually. The nightly builds are created on 10.4 and therefore run only on 10.4. The final builds are created on a really old iMac next to me on 10.2 to be able to run them on 10.2.8 and any higher version of OSX.
Regrettably, 10.2 isn't delivered with zlib, which is needed for png-encoding. Therefore, one of our libraries (ffmpeg) is compiled without zlib-support and you're unable to take screenshots. We keep working on this, but we're currently a bit out of ideas how to link zlib statically with ffmpeg, which is quite difficult because of ffmpeg's strange way of configuring itself.
If any forum user got an idea about this, we'd be glad to hear it ;)

Edit: if we don't have a solution for this until Saturday, I fear that the 0.8.4a release will ship with disabled png-support. It is going to return in 0.8.5, since we are dropping 10.2-support after 0.8.4. ffmpeg compiles finely on 10.3 with zlib-support.

Would it be possible to release a 10.3+-only version that does support PNG, alongside a Jaguar-compatible version that doesn't? I've seen this sort of dual release in a number of other open-source projects; though it does sort of take away the simplicity of having a single version for all releases of OS X, it would enable those of us on a compatible system to export to PNG.
