Fullscreen behaviour with 2.2.3

Postby hupatcha » 06 May 2016 13:26

After upgrading to VLC 2.2.3 64-bit VLC is behaving differently with "fullscreen" activated in video settings.

Version 2.2.2 and before:
1. VLC is closed
2. A video file is double clicked in windows-explorer
3. VLC is opened and is playing the video fullscreen
4. After stopping the video without closing VLC changes to normal window
5. Another video file is double clicked in windows-explorer
6. VLC changes back to fullscreen and is playing the video

Version 2.2.3:
1. VLC is closed
2. A video file is double clicked in windows-explorer
3. VLC is opened and is playing the video fullscreen
4. After stopping the video without closing VLC changes to normal window
5. Another video file is double clicked in windows-explorer
6. VLC doesn't change back to fullscreen and is playing the video in a window

so you have to switch back to fullscreen manually now.

Is this "wanted behaviour" or a bug?

What version of Windows? Can you try the 32bits version?

VLC 2.2.3 32 bit keeps crashing with hardware decoding (dxva) enabled.
With hardware decoding disabled, the behaviour is the same as with the 64 bit version.

Can't stop VLC Media Player from constantly reverting back to the minimized screen size!!

I'm experiencing either the same, or a closely related, similar problem with version 2.2.3 64bit windows 7

I click on VLC Media Player to open the program to play a DVD I've inserted in the drive; click on "open media"; select the drive; click on "play", it opens in the minimum default window size; I re-size it to the size I want, click on " play film" ( or language choice; or whatever -- often a DVD will have half a dozen different short files (30 seconds to 2 minutes long) of FBI notices; copyright warnings; (preceded by a language choice screen as to which language you want to read the copyright notices in!); and then (sometimes multiple!) trailer previews of other coming attractions, before I finally get to the last 40-second menu to choose to actually play the movie, or go to the subtitles sub-menu, etc.)

(I can't, of course, know in advance how many of these "sub-menus" I'm going to have to slog through, until the main film finally opens, which I only know by the fact that it suddenly shows a total playing time of well over an hour, instead of only 2 minutes or less.)

But even though I've already selected (manually resized to) the larger window size (and screen position!) in which I want to watch the movie, EVERY time one such file or sequence comes to an end and VLC proceeds to play the next "menu-item" on the DVD, it automatically reverts back to the default mini-window and screen position!!! And I have to again manually re-size and re-position it!!! Which is a real p-i-t-a!!!

I never noticed this problem in version 2.2.1

My Bad!

Version 2.2.1 displays the same problems! I just never noticed them before because I had heretofore been working with a much smaller display, where the difference in size and position was more minimal.

Still, it seems like a bug to me, that every time the same video, (DVD or iso file), either on it's own or in response to user input, switches to the next "file" on the DVD, that the window size and position reverts to the opening default, and the user has to re-position and re-expand it -- especially noticeable -- and irritating!!! - on a large monitor!

Is this something that can be remedied in future versions? So that so long as no new media (disk or iso file) is selected, the window position and size remains "locked" (stable) (as last specified by the user with the mouse) until or unless the user himself changes it?

Confirming this behaviour, with additional information.

If a video is currently playing in full-screen, or if it is paused but still in full-screen, and I alt-tab over to File Explorer and start a new video, then the new video will also start playing in full-screen. If the video finishes playing then behaviour is as described above. Additionally, it is not necessary to select a new video in File Explorer, this behaviour can be seen by doing the following:

1. With VLC closed, double-click a video in File Explorer.
--> VLC opens in full-screen mode.
2. Press the "stop" button on the player tray.
--> Video stops playing and VLC is in minimalist mode (no video showing, just the control bars).
3. Press the "play" button on the player tray.
--> Video starts playing in original size, not fullscreen.

I have tried selecting Video > Fullscreen from the stopped video. Doing so does cause the video to reopen to fullscreen when "play" is clicked (as in #3), but stopping again causes the check-mark next to Video > Fullscreen to disappear.

Thus, I suspect that the behaviour is a result of a change in how the stop button or stop function itself works. Pressing "stop" is de-flagging fullscreen mode.

I have confirmed that VLC's video settings are set to display in Fullscreen, and have rebooted the computer since I last updated.

My system information is as follows:

Windows 10 Home (64-bit)
Intel Core i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60 GHz (x64-based processor)
16 GB RAM
NVidia GeForce GTX 960

Please let me know if you need additional information.

Has anyone address this yet?

This is happening to me when a video ends in full screen and goes back to the blank windowed player, starting a new video starts in a window instead of full screen like it used to before the update.

I also started having this problem after just updating to 2.2.4. I don't remember the version I was using before this, but it's pretty annoying.
My specs:
Windows7 Professional 64bit SP1
Intel Core i7-3930K @ 3.20 GHz(6 cores)
16 GB DDR3
4 GB EVGA GTX 770

Still unresolved. Windows 10 is garbage but I cannot put windows 7 on this machine.
No matter what video or movie, once it plays it refuses to do anything, even in full screen it sits there and no options can be selected (such as seeking, adding subtitles, minimizing window,).

Will be fixed soon (2.2.5)
Thanks for putting some effort into fixing this bug! It's very much appreciated.

I'm experiencing similar behavior as described above with 2.2.4, and even with 2.2.5 nightlies.

Configuration:
Windows 10
"Play and stop" enabled
"Auto start" disabled
"Allow only one running instance" enabled
"Fullscreen video output" enabled
"Embedded video" disabled
"Video output module" set to "DirectX (DirectDraw) video output"
"Use hardware YUV‐>RGB conversions" disabled
"Name of display device" set to "\\.\DISPLAY2"
"Allow automatic icon changes" disabled in QT

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open VLC
2. Play a video from a playlist or media library
2a. Video appears fullscreen on display 2, properly
3. Before video ends, play another video
3a. Video appears fullscreen on display 2, properly
6. Allow video to play all the way until the end
7. Play another video after playback has stopped

Expected result:
Video appears fullscreen on display 2

Actual result:
Video appears non-fullscreen in display 2

I was hoping the nightlies would fix this behavior, but it still seems reproducible. Are these the commits that should have addressed this issue? If so, are those in the nightlies for 2.2.5?

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!
Ian.

I just wanted to post a quick update. This behavior is still occurring in the latest 2.2.5 nightly http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... 0814-0303/

Also, I've found that playing a JPEG/PNG image after a full-screen video has finished exhibits the same behavior: it appears non-fullscreen instead of fullscreen.

Fullscreen behavior with 2.2.4

Postby freddyrod » 21 Oct 2016 03:10

I have the same issue but noticed a little difference then how others have reported it. I am using 2.2.4.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Double click video/pic from file explorer.
2. Media plays on Display 2 fullscreen as wanted.
3. Press Stop so that my wallpaper shows on Display 2.
4. Double click video/pic from file explorer.
5. Media plays on Display 1 windowed instead of full screen. All media from this point forward will appear windowed, sometimes on display 1 and sometimes on Display 2. Sometimes I can see the window in between both displays. The only solution is to close VLC.

As long as i don't press the stop button ever all media will go to display 2 fullscreen as wanted.

At long last, this issue is resolved! I downloaded the latest 2.2.5 nightly and now, all files open in full screen. VLC usurps focus whether or not another window was on top of it and it never plays in windowed mode unless I want it to. Fantastic.
My specs:
Windows7 Professional 64bit SP1
Intel Core i7-3930K @ 3.20 GHz(6 cores)
16 GB DDR3
4 GB EVGA GTX 770

I have the same problem now but with images with the latest update. Using VLC to control second monitor after clicking on image file for lecture it displays on second monitor in fullscreen pressing stop for to remove image and going to black screen for continued discussion I click on next image and it always opens in minimized window. All settings are set for fullscreen but this only started happening with latest update of vlc 2.2.4 before that it worked fine.
