Apple tv and vlc No audio

Postby Michael D » 06 Aug 2016 11:50

I have used VLC and Apple tv for streaming from my Macbook to my tv with succes up to a few months ago . Now I get video but don't get audio on the tv set.
I have tried resetting and reloading Apple tv (3rd generation), I ve tried changing the audio settings on the Macbook (version 2011 + El capitan), I ve tried reinstalling VLC, plus two older versions of VLC, but nothing helps. I'm pretty sure it must be for VLC settings because when I stream with any other video player ( You tube from a browser or Quick time) there is audio.
Thanks for you help.

Michael

The problem with VLC and sound when using a 3rd generation Apple TV has a long thread on the Apple forums. I tried all of the suggestions on the Apple forum, to no avail. Not sure what is going on, but here is what worked for me.

Launch the video using VLC, but do not run the video in Full Screen. Stream just the audio to your Apple TV; do not stream the video just yet. Once the audio starts playing through the Apple TV, mirror the Mac display to the Apple TV. You should get both video and audio playing on the Apple TV. Then stretch the window to whatever size fits you.

With my setup, if I put VLC in Full Screen mode, the video plays with audio for 60 seconds or so, then the video locks up. So long as I stay out of Full Screen mode, I get the video and audio playing just fine on the Apple TV.

As a followup to my last post...
I cannot get audio from VLC to an Apple TV 3rd generation no matter what I do if I have the Apple TV speakers set to AirPlay speakers. I set my Apple TV to use AirPlay speakers so that I could adjust the volume using the silver Apple TV remote. In my prior post, I was using speakers directly connected to my Apple TV.
Additionally, this looks to be a problem with using mirroring on the Mac. When I use Beamer or Quicktime or iTunes, all of which have AirPlay built into them, audio and video work fine with AirPlay to Apple TV then Apple TV audio to AirPlay speakers. However, VLC and Vox, both of which do not have built in AirPlay can only send audio to the Apple TV if I am not using Apple TV audio to AirPlay speakers.
