Can't logon to Plex Media Server when attempting to stream remotely.

Postby VegasChris » 23 Jul 2016 15:53

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here and I've only had a little VLC experience. I have set up Plex Media Server on my PC and I've successfully enabled remote access. One thing to note is that my Home PCs are all connecting to the internet via a subscription VPN if that makes a difference.

I can steam locally via SMB shares with no issues, but when I attempt to log in to stream remotely via Plex, I get a popup message that reads, "Plex Login error, Check your Plex account settings." I can acces the plex server if I'm on the same setwork, but If I switch to LTE or other Wifi connection, this is all I get. Does plex require me to pay to stream to a third party app? I've tried loggin in with my email address and password and my user name and password. Heck, just to humore myself, I attemted to log in with my PC's user name and password. the port is correct, the server IP is correct, I just don't know what to do anymore.

Plex support in VLC-iOS and VLC-tvOS is currently limited to the local network. It does not work via VPN. As you already found out, that limitation does not apply to SMB shares.

I figured as much. Thank you for your response. I actually found a more elegant solution, allbeit a more challenging one to learn.

I created a hyper-v virtual machine, created a virtual network switch and installed the OpenVPN virtual appliance. Now when I connect to the access server it's as if I'm on the local network and I can access my shared folders as if I were. Have to be careful though, as tempting as it is to stream on LTE, it will eat my data plan alive; have to be on a hotspot.

Thanks again for the response.
