VLC 2.2.4 not showing video but only audio since upgrade to Mac OS El Capitan

Postby nikhilm » 02 Jul 2016 14:12

I have a Macbook Pro 13" late 2011. I recently updated the OS to El Capitan 10.11.5
Since the update I am not able to play any video file on my VLC Player (2.2.4)
MP4, MKV, AVI - No file is played. I can only hear audio and there is no video.
I have tried re-installing VLC atleast 10 times and have scoured through any available forums about this topic, but have noticed that while some users have this problem - there isn't a solution.

Could someone please help? Thanks!

Did you try to reset VLCs preferences?

I also have had this occur since V 2.2.0 and it's not on any one particular video, but when switching codecs. If you play a different video using a different codec often it will then play the video fine. IE: video plays using using codec a then another playing codec b (which doesn't show video) if I play another video with codec c which plays and then go back to the prior one it plays without any issue. unfortunately, it's been so random that I haven't thought to look at it more closely (and it's been relatively easy to resolve) I figured it was a problem with the video file.

Yes did that multiple times. No use. The problem persists even after reinstalling VLC and resetting preferences.

I am a little confused about this, sorry! Could you tell me which codec to select?

Do any errors appear in VLC's message window ('window' menu -> messages...), if there are please could you share the message log.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.
