The best file format for my movies?

Hi,

Can anyone reccomend the best format to convert nmy DVD's for playback via VLC on the AppleTV.
My files are stored on a NAS.

I currently have my movies backed up as ISO's but now need a file format that will be compatible with VLC on the AppleTV and be the best quality.
I just need the movie but would prefer to have the multi channel sound if possible too and be the closest to the original quality.

I'm lost as to what format to choose. Ideally something that can just play and not need transcoding? (is that the word?) would be good to minimise efforts on the NAS.

MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC audio.
That will require transcoding though, but don't do it on the fly. Convert your DVDs to this format with something easy to use like Avidemux or Handbrake then just play the MP4 files.

I prefer Matroska (MKV) myself. There are restrictions on what stream formats are supported in an MP4 container. Matroska supports almost anything. You can stream them to the AppleTV (4th gen) using Plex. Plex gives you artwork, metadata, etc. Great solution, much better than using iTunes.

I'm a firm believer that you should either keep the iso format or just convert it to mpeg. There's a reason why it's such a popular format lol
