Volume-Control/Slider VLC 0.8.2 - 0.8.4-test1a

Postby Dandruff » 23 Sep 2005 11:27

Please bring back the Volume-Slider in MME/WaveOut-Mode! Missing it since version 0.8.2. In version 0.8.1 it was there (and worked fine)!

with 0.8.4-test1 it looks better, but the slider gets fixed at full volume (as soon as playback is started). why can't i change volume anymore? with version 0.8.1 it worked. since 0.8.2 it's not possible anymore ...

maybe it has something to do with my soundcard -> i'm using a rme hdsp 9632, which only has mme-drivers. there's also no volume control in windows for it (because the card uses it's own dsp-mixer for that ...)

does vlc (since 0.8.2) requires the windows-mixer? with version 0.8.1 i could change the volume with vlc's own internal mixer (volume control)!

You may have a too big volume value in your preferences. Try resetting them.

it's default-volume (256)! and i always delete the preferences before installing a new version. so that can't be the reason of this ...

in version 0.8.2 there was something major changed. portaudio and volume-control both worked fine till version 0.8.1. since version 0.8.2 i'll have to use mme-output (and when starting playback, the volume gets fixed to the value set under preferences) ...

i just can say it again: it must have something to do with my soundcard. it only has mme-drivers. and these don't support 32bit floating point. here the manual, if it helps you: http://www.rme-audio.com/english/downlo ... 9632_e.pdf

page 77: transfer modes

- 16 bit 2 byte (stereo 4 bytes)
- 16 bit 4 byte MSB (stereo 8 bytes)
- 24 bit 4 byte MSB (stereo 8 bytes)
- 32 bit 4 byte (stereo 8 bytes)

when using the skins2 interface, the volume-slider can be moved, but it always skips back to 100% and i don't hear any change in volume ...

I'm just asking the team whether anybody can reproduce that. If this won't be fixed immediatelly, I'll file a ticket in trac for that.

Okay, it's ticket #381.
You are welcome.

BTW. About your thoughts concerning the German translation. This thingy in the menu appears to be a UTF-8-issue. I'll try to reproduce that, otherwise it will be filed to trac as well.
Thanks for your reminder of the inconsistent translation. I'll fix it once -test2 is out.

?

that the driver of my soundcard doesn't support float32, right?

maybe useful information for you vlc developers:

today the rme driver developer wrote to me, that they removed the 'device supports float32' from the driver (because the card doesn't support this format). before it was marked as 'supported'.

maybe this change was done after the release of vlc 0.8.1 (or before the release of vlc 0.8.2).

could this caused the volume-slider to not working anymore in vlc?

right now the rme-driver is bug-free!

i really would like to have the volume-slider working again! and could you please implement one of these output-formats (for mme/waveout):

- 24 bit 4 byte MSB (stereo 8 bytes) or
- 32 bit 4 byte (stereo 8 bytes)

?

thanks!
