Installing latest version on Debian (jessie)

Postby scootergrisen » 07 Aug 2015 03:38

I have Debian jessie and want to install the latest stable version of VLC + translation.
I'm not used to using Linux.

I go to http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-debian.html and read about wheezy, but i have jessie.
Can i install the wheezy one even though i'm using jessie or will that give problems?

I have installed the jessie one now but as the page says can't guarantee latest version and the version is 2.2.0-rc2 Weatherwax, so i want newer version then that.

Do i have to update Debian to wheezy, before i can use VLC for wheezy?.

Yeah but that is not the latest stable version.
Its 2.2.0-rc2 Weatherwax, but i want the latest stable version (2.2.1).

You have to recompile or use testing/unstable then.

Should that page not be updated?

Because as far as i can tell jessie is stable, stretch is testing and wheezy is obsolete.

So change:
Debian stable (wheezy)
Debian testing (jessie)
Debian unstable (sid)

To:
Debian stable (jessie)
Debian testing (stretch)
Debian unstable (sid)
