Connection Problem (www.videolan.org)

Postby MuldeR » 30 Oct 2005 23:17

Since a few days I'm unable to connect to http://www.videolan.org and trac.videolan.org. However forum.videolan.org works fine for me. I know those servers are not down, but I'm unable to connect...

Any ideas ???

That's probably a problem with your AOL connection. Please refer to their customer support, although this is quite strange since since all three webpages are hosted on the same server. Could you try to ping them using "ping -c 1 [the url]" on your command-line / DOS-shell and tell us the results?

Well, your IP told me that ;)

to the admins: "Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung." means "Connection timed out."
Additionally "Pakete: Gesendet = 4, Empfangen = 0, Verloren = 4 (100% Verlust)" is "Pakets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% lost)"

I've just heard this from another German user. Perhaps there is a problem in a router somewhere here.

1) This is *not* a browser problem. Occurs in all browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera and so on...)

2) I just noticed: If I connect to my university through VPN, the problem is solved. So if it's really a router problem, maybe they use a different router there...

3) This other german user, is he using AOL too? (AOL problem ?!?!)

4) If it's a router problem, how can this be fixed for me ????

Ping ganesh.videolan.org [32.2.138.195] mit 32 Bytes Daten
Ganesh.videolan.org has IPv4 address 138.195.130.74, surely not 32.2.138.195. I've checked all of our three name servers for the videolan.org DNS zone, and they all return correct information.

I hereby infer that the problem is in your DNS resolver, or your DNS servers. Please ask your network administrator, and remove any VPN/firewall program that might be the source of the bug.

If I open "http://138.195.130.74" in my web-browser, it works! However http://www.videolan.org and ganesh.videolan.org still does *not* work.

I don't have a network admin, since I'm at home. I do *not* use VPN or a Firewall. Nevertheless I'm behind a broadband-router, but that shouldn't be the problem...

tracert seems to detect the correct IP while ping uses the wrong one. Any ideas how this can happen ???

Most likely a bug in your DNS resolver, if AOL provides its own, or in your DNS server.

Does your box provides any kind of DNS caching/forwarding/proxying?

This means I'll have to contact AOL for support ?!?!?

No, it's a very simple DSL-Router. But I have already done a complete Reset. Just to be sure. Problem still there.

In that case, AOL is the only possible culprit.

Well, it merely seems to be an awfully flawed DNS resolver bug within AOL (either on their network or inside the installed access software).

What happens if you try to reach, e.g. http://www.kame.net ?

I just tried to load http://www.kame.net/ and it took hours for connecting, so I was waiting for the time-out. But finally the page startet loading. Okay. Then I tried http://www.videolan.org/ and again it tooks hours for connecting, but suddenly the page started loading. I got no idea, what was wrong all the time. But it has been fixed :D

Nevertheless connection seems to be *extremely* slow. My browser shows the site but loading the images takes years...

Code: Select all

C:\>ping www.videolan.org Ping www.videolan.org [138.195.130.74] mit 32 Bytes Daten: Antwort von 138.195.130.74: Bytes=32 Zeit=703ms TTL=46 Antwort von 138.195.130.74: Bytes=32 Zeit=760ms TTL=46 Antwort von 138.195.130.74: Bytes=32 Zeit=973ms TTL=46 Antwort von 138.195.130.74: Bytes=32 Zeit=739ms TTL=46 Ping-Statistik für 138.195.130.74: Pakete: Gesendet = 4, Empfangen = 4, Verloren = 0 (0% Verlust), Ca. Zeitangaben in Millisek.: Minimum = 703ms, Maximum = 973ms, Mittelwert = 793ms
That's the correct IP now, eh?

//EDIT

http://138.195.130.74/ opens developers.videolan.org :?

That has to be a bug with AOL as regards IPv6-enabled servers.

Try removing IPv6 support if it is installed on your computer or install it if it is not. In any case, the problem is on your/AOL's side.

How do I remove IPv6 support from Windows? Is it enought to stop the "IPv6-to-IPv4" service? If so, it didn't help...

yeah :D
I uninstalled IPv6 through the commandline and rebooted my system.
Now everything seems to work fine: I can open http://www.videolan.org/ without delay and the page loads in "normal" speed.

Are there any problems from uninstalling IPv6 or can I live without that feature ???
