Quality of VOB to AVI

Most of the formats it converts VOB into were not playable with VLC, however when converting to AVI format what is the compression ratio? How can I be sure how close to the original video quality it will be? I don't care if the file size is double. I can scale down later. I just want as exact as possible. Does anyone know what compression is uses and how one might keep it uncompressed?

Ever since the latest update I haven't been able to convert anything into a playable video format, and the files come out very small so something isn't right. I had to downgrade back to the previous version to get anything except now the audio is way out of sync.
