Sorry for the delay in reply, I had reluctantly abandoned my efforts to master this feature!
When I received your reply I was using my iPad and could not sign in to the site as I didn't have my password handy resulting in the long delay!!
I am still interested in achieving my objective, but feel you might be able to advise a simpler way!
The particular file I was attempting to re-record omitting the adverts, was a ".ts" file copied from my Wharfedale PVR to a USB Flash drive.
The folder on my USB flash drive was immediately "owned" by VLC as soon as it loaded to play and the properties of the folder now say it is a "VLC media file (.ts)"
The file plays perfectly, but all attempts to create a recording from it result in files named "vlc record" followed by the full date and time and the original file name!
An enormously long name, but as the end it still says ".ts"
That said, the file will not play, all that happens is that the player's record buttons, the scroll bar and the window title bar all flicker like a failing light bulb.
Attempting the same thing with an mp4 file results in a playable recording.
Oddly, I also tried playing a "VLC media file (.ts) (.ts)" file and the resulting re-recordings properties strangelylist it as a "Movie Clip (.mpg)", default player WMP.
I always thought I had a tenuous grip on the reality that is the world of Video formats, but now I fear I have totally lost it!.... HELP!
EDIT:
There is an hour of my life totally wasted!
Converted to mp4 using "Any Video Converter" and the resulting file plays at less than 50% of the original screen size and the sound lags by almost half a second!
That said, VLC will now output a readable re-recording.
So, subject to finding a decent open source converter to convert from .ts to .mp4, I will be able to achieve my original objective of re-recording to remove the adverts!
There must be an easier way, surely?
