Choppy playback with WMV files

Postby Mitsauce » 10 May 2015 07:56

Recently, I have noticed that VLC has choppy playback with WMV files. It USED to not have any problems until the new update.

ALL other video files types play fine.

Any help available?

I just recently updated to 2.2.1 and I suddenly have the same problems with wmv files.
They stutter, no matter wich resolution they have.
I even completely reinstalled the 64bit version, but the stuttering stays.
mp4 files play good.
I have no problems with wmv files in windows media player and windows media player classic.

It seems more ppl have theese troubles:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... mv#p423567

Fix?

EDIT: The exact codec is Windows Media Video 9 (WMV3) and if I view the statistics while I playback a file it shows me I loose about 1/3rd of all frames...
I got 16 Gig Ram, Winsows 7 64, Geforce GTX770 and an Intel XEON CPU with I think 6 cores...

UPDATE 2:
I reinstalled again and found an old 2.1.3 Rincewind 32 bit version of vlc on my harddrive... the wmv files work fine now...
But if i update the player with the check for updates option the 2.2.1 version is downloaded and installed and wmv videos stutter again :(

Please share one file that is stuttering.
Because of the nature of the video I will send you the link in a PM...

Checked a view more videos with this codec, and not all of them are stuttering, only the ones especially from this site it seems... :?
They are working fine in other players though.

Hello Jean-Baptiste,

I can confirm that there is an issue since 2.2.0 (Windows 7 64-Bit). About 15% of my wmv´s stutter now. If they stutter there are also warnings "picture is too late to be displayed" in the messages log (for the other working wmv´s this warning does not appear).

I have uploaded an affected wmv here:

http://www.filedropper.com/tgamescom09g ... babesmgthd

I tested on three different Windows 7 64-Bit systems, the chopiness and warnings occur on all of them. No problems/warnings with VLC 2.1.5 or older.

Could someone please confirm this issue ? Play the wmv with 2.2.0 (or newer) and have a look at the messages log (verbosity level 1 or 2). There should be warnings "picture is too late to be displayed". Then play the wmv with 2.1.5 (or older) and there should be no warnings AND the playback should be much smoother.

Isn't there any workaround yet? Happens to me with every single .wmv no matter file size or quality using VLC 2.2.1 on Windows 8.1 x64.

I just recently updated to 2.2.1 and I suddenly have the same problems with wmv files.
They stutter, no matter wich resolution they have.
I have the same problem with VLC > v2.1.5 (v2.2.x for example). Nothing helps.

In the CHANGE LOG, i found this entry:
Changes between 2.1.6 and 2.2.0:
...
Demuxer:
...
* Important rework of the ASF/WMV demuxer, notably for seeking,
synchronization and tracks exclusion
...
It is certainly not a CPU/GPU problem, because other players like VLC v2.1.5, Windows Media Player and others have no problem with the same files (HD Video). It is something in VLC v2.2.x and newer.

I am wondering why there is no response/confirmation from a developer.

We can´t do more than report this issue and provide as much information as possible... and hope that you fix it.

Still having this issue. Message log is empty. For now I've just switched the default WMV program back to windows media player.

sudieken, did you set the verbosity level in message log to 1 or 2 ? The warnings are only visible if verbosity level is 1 or 2.

Could you please try the example wmv I posted above ? With this you should see the warnings when using VLC 2.2.0 or newer.

Yeah, would be nice if any of the devs could have a closer look at this, it's a really annoying issue.

I am having the same choppiness with some of the standard .wmv files that ship with Windows 7.

In the folder C:\Program Files\DVD Maker\Shared\DvdStyles\BabyBoy, all of the .wmv files show the same effect. I am using v2.2.2 but I have tried others with the no change. In Media Player they play smooth as butter. In VLC they are very choppy and show tearing.

Some examples:
BabyBoyScenesBackground_PAL.wmv
BabyBoyNotesBackground.wmv
BabyBoyMainToNotesBackground.wmv
etc.

I would have attached some but I might not have privileges to do so.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

And in fact none of the default Windows 7 .wmv files in
C:\Program Files\DVD Maker\Shared\DvdStyles\Performance
seem to play at all. Again they are normal in Media Player.
