I am no expert, but I've struggled a lot with VLC and will try to help.
What version of VLC are you using? From where did you download it?
What are you trying to play ie: a file from your computer, a file from a DVD, a file from a video recorder
What are you using (windows 7, mac, etc.)
I will give it a try to see if I can help.

I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64bit. My VLC 2.1.0 also stops as soon as the movie starts. All my files are .mkv's. It used to play fine with VLC 1.1.5, but after the upgrade all went south. Now after a fresh install, it still does not want to play. I've tried 1.1.5, 2.1.0 and 2.1.5. All the same result.
