I'm having a similar issue. Playback of a WMV file (audio: WMAP, 3F2R/LFE, 48kHz, 32b/sample 128kbps; video: WVC-1 advanced, 640x480, 23.976fps, 1Mbps) is fine with Windows Media Player, but in VLC the log fills with warnings about the picture being too late to be displayed. CPU usage is comparable in both programs at about 3-5%, though VLC uses about twice as much memory (60M versus 30M). The playback in VLC is unusably bad, but the audio is fine.
Things I have tried - changing the output module between Direct3D, DirectX, Direct2D, OpenGL, and automatic, enabling and disabling accelerated video, decorations, and hardware conversions, enabling and disabling deinterlacing, setting file caching to 1000ms, as well as various FFmpeg options (resilience, workaround, skip loop, hardware decoding, threads). No effect. For whatever reason, my VLC install a few days ago played everything fine, and now after upgrading to 2.2.1, wmv files basically don't work.
Ideas?
