Release : VLC media player 0.8.4-test2

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

For the mov from the Kodak cam, it claims to be jpeg and so is wrongly treated by VLC as we now have a jpeg decoder.
You can either delete libsdl_images_plugins.dll if you never use vlc to see images or you can force the decoder with

Code: Select all

vlc file.mov :codec=ffmpeg
Thanks for th reply, where do I put that code?

ive just tried the same h264 file with the compaq n800 notebook of my girlfried. it played without a hassle @ only 30 % cpu.

ive used version from the 7th, test2a. is there also a mac osx built of test2a?

@ haifischjunge: no there isn't, because the a-version fixes a win32-only problem (it was accidentally compiled without MKV / Matroska support).

What kind of Mac are you using? Are sure that your Mac is as fast as your girlfriend's laptop?

well, the n800 has a 1,7ghz pentium m, and my powerbook has a 1ghz g4. i think the n800 is a lot faster. however the file plays fine with the quicktime player on my powerbook and as you can see from my first post the problem is more that h264 crashes vlc (besides of a bit choppy playback)

ive just retried with test2. after a fresh restart the h264 plays quite fine (only choppy at complexe scenes) however it never played longer than 3 minutes, then vlc crashed. i could even change the timeposition and after some seconds the video syncs with the sound however, no way to get more the 3 minutes of video playback.

if i could provide logs just tell me to. thx

H264 support is still not 100%. Especially on Mac it's still DOG slow, and when it gets behind, this can cause a crash of the decoder, taking VLC with it.
Don't use PMs for support questions.

Dreambox streams problem

Postby zakini » 08 Nov 2005 17:38

Hi,

a stream problem we found with 0.8.2 shows up also in this release.

I will repeat what the problem is, tnx for the support!

______________________________

Hi,

I will try to report this problem in a more detailed way:

Dreambox is a satellite decoder based on linux

Dreambox can hold different software images, here I'm referring to the Da Vinci 5 image

This image has a web interface that allows you to control the decoder and also send video streams to vlc

To send streams you click on a link and the browser writes down a temporary file named, in my particular case

H:\DOCUME~1\alessiof\IMPOST~1\Temp\video-4.pls

The pls file is handled by vlc, with 0.8.2 we get nothing, with other versions all works ok.

here is the content of the pls file, read with notepad

http://10.0.0.30:31339/0,0068,0204,028e,0204

if we open the link directly all works fine.

So it seems that in some way pls parsing/redirecting in VLC got broken, or disabled.

Hope it can be fixed soon, if you like more info about this problem just ask.

Regards

@MuldeR: Either the source serving your stream is way to slow to deliver it or your file is seriously broken. In the first case, an enhancement of the input-buffer in VLC's preferences might help, but I'm not really sure about this. In the latter case, you can't do anything. The timing inside your file is broken and there is no way to recover it correctly.
It's a local file.

Im sure my file is *not* broken. It plays 100% fine in Media Player Classic with latest ffdshow. And even in VLC with all those warnings, playback looks and sounds okay (time to time some slight stuttering, but not that much).

Hi,
I have put a test2a binary on the server which fix the mkv problem.
http://ftp.videolan.org/pub/testing/vlc ... -win32.exe

Hallo!
Just wonder: The audio of this videoclip is choppy (for me) when
played with VLC (but no problem with MPC or M$-WMP). URL:
http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon ... I_0030.AVI

(Video : 14.12 MB, 14809 Kbps, 30.0 fps, 640*480 (4:3), MJPG =Motion JPEG)
(Audio : 86 KB, 88 Kbps, 11024 Hz, 1 channels, 0x1 = PCM)

Thanks for the otherwise great player.
Best regards, /Freddy

audio isn't choppy here. but with postprocessing enabled, half of the video is green-colored!?

Maybe Azureus+AntiVirus+ZoneAlarm makes my computer slow.
14809 Kbps for the video + 88 Kbps for the audio is rather much (but strange that there's no problem with MPC or M$-WMP. Better picture-quality with VLC?).

I also get half of the video green-colored with postprocessing enabled, but not when disabled.

Cheers,/Freddy

@MuldeR: That a file is playing fine in MPC doesn't mean that it isn't broken. Especially MPC plays a lot of files which are seriously broken, but you just don't get to know this. Remuxing the file to MPEG PS using the wizard might help though, because it re-creates the file's internal architecture, etc., but I'm not 100% sure about this.

@haifischjunge: The reason is mostly that the ffmpeg-decoder we are using is mostly optimised for x86-CPU-extensions (such as SSE2/SSE3, etc.) while it isn't that optimised for the AltiVec-unit of the PowerPC-processors. The QT-decoder is way more optimised and that's why it is getting better results.
The ffmpeg-decoder is actually getting better almost from day to day, so VLC 0.8.4 will probably be much faster than 0.8.2.

@Fkuehne
I have encoded most of the AVI file myself with the current stable release of VirtualDub, so I'm very sure that the files are not broken! Theay play fine in any player I've tested and they open in VirtualDub without any problems/warnings. Furthermore I've noticed that all those warnings don't appear always. Sometimes they come sometimes not. No idea, what's the trigger for that problem. Seeking seems to make the warnings stop for a while. BTW: I also had similar warnings with some MP3s. Playback was still fine...

//edit

I've just successfully remuxed my AVI to MKV. Doesn't change anything: Playback in VLC is fine, but I still get bombed with warnings all the time. Of course I can ignore the warnings, but it's strange...

Confirmed. VLC has always had problems with the audio from canon cameras for me. Enabling caching sometimes helps.

VLC Crashes my OS

Postby VLC-FAN » 10 Nov 2005 16:57

What I like with VLC is that it supports a wide variety of video formats without the need of additional codecs (unlike Windows Media Player)

Moreover VLC plays partially downloaded movies ! It's very cool when I download porn of music videos on Emule : I can play them while downloading and see if they are fake. It's great.

Now the bad part ... What I HATE with VLC is that it sometimes crashes my OS (Windows XP SP2) !!! I have tons of software on my computer and not a single one crashes my OS. It really gets on my nerves. My computer has been running not stop for One Week without rebooting, I launch a video file with VLC and BOOM : I get the Blue Screen :x

I have the feeling that VLC attempts to access video hardware directly, which causes my OS to crash. Direct hardware access is good for performance but not for reliability. I prefer having a movie not play smoothly than having it play perfectly but sometimes crash my computer.

DTS WAV

Postby shinto » 10 Nov 2005 21:13

i'm having problems trying to make my DTS WAV files to work on versions 8.2 and 8.4-test2.

v8.2:
-i drag and drop the file onto the VLC player and then no sound was coming out.
-i was using the default settings

v8.4-test2:
-i drag and drop the file onto the VLC player (no skin) it puts out windows error.
-i drag and drop the file onto the VLC player (w/ skin) but no sound comes out (same effect on v8.2)

but when i used v8.1 that doesn't use windows installer, the DTS WAV files run perfectly.

well... congratulations for this great program.. works VERY well!!

but in earlier version of vlc, in playlist i could put up or down the file because there were the arrows that just can permit this...

but in latest versions this is not possible... is it right ? :) or i'm just missing something ?

@ shinto: The DTS decoder was removed from VLC after the 0.7.2 release because of legal threats. It is probably not included in the 0.8.1 release.

O.8.4 test2 eats subtitles

Postby jjardoino » 11 Nov 2005 17:28

Today I tried to see an AVI with a .srt file. But near half of the subtitles were not displayed. One was displayed, next was not, next was, next was not...

I took a look on the .srt file with BBEdit. It was correct, and time code datas were correct too.

I restarted the playing with the 0.8.2, and all the subtitles were correctly displayed.

If this can be useful for developers... :)
