VLC plugin for Chrome 42 on Windows 8.1 NOT WORKING

Postby dligac » 17 Apr 2015 11:19

I believe this is because Chrome 42 doesn't support NPAPI plugins, but id does support PPAPI plugins. Will there be a release of PPAPI VLC plugin for Chrome 42? Cause I REALLY NEED THIS

No, there will not be because code does not spawn magically. Nobody volunteered to write the code. And even if someone started now, it would probably take a year or so.

Hi dligac,

It is still possible for you to enable support of NPAPI plugins within Chrome 42 until September 2015 (at which point the explanation I am going to give you will be disabled permanently in Chrome).

In your chrome browser:
Type "chrome://flags" without the quotation marks.
Search for chrome://flags/#enable-npapi on the page. Or, load it directly by typing in "chrome://flags/#enable-npapi" into chrome's address bar and hitting enter.
Activate it by clicking on the link "Enable".
Restart the browser.
All NPAPI plugins installed in Chrome will become available again.

That should give you some time to continue to use the VLC plug-in within Chrome; at least until September 2015.
After that, there are only two options that seem reasonable:
1) Switch to another web browser that supports NPAPI plugins (i.e. Mozilla Firefox).
2) Don't update Chrome to stay on a version that supports plugins.

Hope that helps.

You need to properly restart chrome.

What is the suggest replacement for the VLC web plugin on chrome? Are there any known PPAPI plugins that can play multicast UDP?

As far as I can tell, multicast support in PPAPI is very recent, if not still experimental. So I doubt there is any decent player plugin as yet. If you need this, I suggest you switch to Firefox, as nucleare advised above.
