Place both the .avi file and the .srt in the same folder.
Then open vlc, goto File->Open File...
Click browse, locate the .avi file...
Then click subtitle options, and click Settings...
Click browse and locate the .srt file...
Click ok, click ok...

When it starts playing goto Video->Subtitles->Track 1

Yes, you can use SSA instead of SRT (or sub, idx, and so on)

job

.sub

Ok, it normally works for me but now, with .sub file, it somehow does not want to run. Even when I try to switch it on through video options. Have any idea?

Not that bad

Well, it's not that bad. Everything sofar I tried to open, it worked out perfectly in vlc. It's the first problem I encounter actually. Anyway, regarding the subs, I knew the drill allready but you see, even when I previously loaded the subs in the opening ops, the option is still not appearing in the video sub-menu. I guess it's a bug and their's no answer to this one. Thanks anyway, I'll try to find it .slr format.
