It's working fine for me.

Try to reset the preferences:

As it stands, it relates only .mkv on an external hard drive. When I copy them to the internal, I can play it.

Strange.

I had a similar problem with MKV files from a network share.

It seems that, at least after I reset the preferences, the MKVs do start playing... but they take way way way longer to start up than they did with 2.1.5, such that you might think they're not loading.

Jesus............... You are right.
I try this and wait. After 23,01 seconds the .mkv started.

That was under 2.1.5 much better.

Does it help if you untick the "Preload MKV files in the same directory" option ?

Menu Tools -> Preferences (Show Settings = ALL) -> Input/Codecs -> Demuxers -> Matroska
The option is on the right panel. Untick it then save, exit and restart VLC.

It doesn't seem to help for me...

(But... does that option actually mean what I think it does? and so, if I have 30GB of MKVs in a network share, VLC will try to preload them all? How is this not going to destroy networks...)

Same problem here. Local *.mkv files play instantly but network mkv shares take 30 seconds up to 1 minute to start playing. Network AVI's and MP4's do not cause any problems.

Another "same here". When attempting to play an MKV file (5 minute video - 1280x738) from my NAS it takes about 20 to 25 seconds load then play and occasionally stutters while playing (like its buffering). Same file loads and plays without issue from my local hard drive. MP4 video plays fine from my NAS albeit with a slight pause (about 4 seconds) to load the file from the NAS drive. The "preload" check box whether enabled or disabled doesn't seem to make a difference on my end.

Hi. I have a similar problem, and I think I have made some interesting finding.

I have a Synology NAS where I store videos, and I access them though my gigabit LAN. Since 2.2, any mkv file file took ~5 seconds to start (was immediate with previous versions). Now here is the interesting part:

if the length of the name of the file without extension is <=8 characters, there is no delay. Otherwise there is a 5 seconds delay. e.g:

12345678.mkv -> no delay
123456789.mkv -> delay

So it seems that the good old 8.3 filename convention in Windows is the cause of the issue.

A few notes:
- VLC versions prior 2.2 are not affected.
- VLC 2.2 on Mac is not affect (I don't have a linux box with GUI to test).
- only files on a network drive are affected.
- The issue only exists at the opening of the file, not when seeking.

log file of a session with the delay: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/241836/log.txt

Could any of the previous posters confirm my findings?

As requested one of my logs: http://www.pastebin.ca/2946312

@xmichelo: I was not able to reproduce your findings concerning the length of the filename. I tried anything from 1 character to 80 characters mkv file names. They all suffer 30 second to 1 minute delays.

I'm running a Synology NAS, same as xmichelo. Anyone else running Synologys or other Linux-based NAS?

I'm wondering something - what OS are people running? I was having this problem on Windows 10.0.9926; I can't seem to reproduce it using 2.2.0 on two Windows 7 machines.

This happens to me too. My VLC host is running Windows 7 x64. The SMB server is running Ubuntu 14.04. The identical file, when played from a local hard drive, is fine.

The Task Manager shows no spikes in network traffic during the wait.

I've also got an occasional stutter and what seems like some form of data corruption: a keyframe goes gray, then the normal frame-changes are applied to that grayness.

Now I've reinstalled 2.1.5; it does not exhibit the problem.

Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit and I'm running a Synology NAS. I also put the mkv files to the mkv-network-test via an old Windows XP machine but to no avail. Same old delays.

Log file link below is of a 5:41 minute long MKV file stored on an external USB drive connected to a Belkin N300 router running TomatoUSB firmware (Samba). File is accessed on the local network and takes approximately 18 to 25 seconds to load. MP4 version of the same file loads in approximately 3 seconds from the same network location.

Oh, fine, haven't seen this post before.
The same for me too, i'm not alone.
So for me too, MKV are long to load on local network storage, and it's not a network problem (300 Mbps Wifi and Gigabit ethernet).
Other files are fine.
