mp4 files won't play (or even show up in the listing)

The video is Codec: MPEG-4 Video (mp4v) 4:2:0 YUV and audo is MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a).

These play fine in windows, but, they don't play on vlc for android. They don't even show up in the listing of files!

The android device can play them just fine with the video player by google.

So, I am confused on why vlc can't play/show them ?

Similar thing is happening on my Samsung GT-S7262 with Android version 4.1.2
The thumbnail of the mp4 file is visible when VLC is opened, but when try to play the mp4 video, the cone rotates a few times, then VLC crashes, giving an error message that says, "A serious error has occurred and vlc has closed" which is followed by multiple lines of text that looks like code.

Are you using hardware acceleration? Try and see if it crashes if you disable it. Some devices are known for poor/unstable hardware decoding, unfortunately.

Hmm, didn't get a notification about a reply.

Anyway, I updated to the latest beta build, and all appears fine now.
This was on a Moto G.
