Have either of you tried disabling hardware acceleration?
(Preferences > Input/codecs > video codecs > FFMpeg and select 'Hardware Decoding' to disable)

Then beyond that, i cannot think of anything else that might work.

By the way, what file types are you using?
.MKV, .MP4, .AVI, .TS ?? And what framerate and resolution are they?

Having the same problem on a Lenovo y480 ideapad running windows 7

TEMPORARY FIX - set the volume to 100%

After fooling around with the settings and getting nowhere I found that the problem seems to go away completely (for me) with the volume set at 100% and then become worse and worse the further you put the audio away from full. Also, it appears that when the volume is set below 100%, the audio plays at the right level then decreases intermittently, whereas with the audio set above 100% the audio increases intermittently. Hope this helps.

Even with this, VLC is still 100 times better than windows media player. Though I'm still looking forward to the fix.

I'm finding that the more complex the audio (louder music, more full frequency range of highs to lows) the audio drops out much more often. If the audio track has less volume and less sounds (down to almost nothing like the sound of someone walking, occasional birds chirping) then the audio will play for a much longer period before it has a drop out.
I´ve noticed the same. For a while i suspected some kind of normalize/peak protection -issue?

Rock On!

If you set the VLC audio volume above 100%, then Windows will apply peak protection internally to avoid digital saturation. In my opinion, volume should be capped at 100% anyway.

Keeping the volume at 100% doesn't change anything for me. I am sure it is a problem with my computer as VLC is fine with other computers in the house.

I just can't figure out why a brand new install of windows 7 on a new quad core computer would have this problem on all types of audio and video files.
