Add a shortcut to a webstream in Android

Postby richtopia » 03 Jan 2015 20:39

First - thanks for the port, I've been happy with VLC on my phones for a few years now.

My question is, does anyone know of an easy way to remember a webstream in Android? Currently I can copy and paste a URL from a saved document (http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r1.asx) into the open stream dialog, which is a little clunky, particularly on a phone.

The functionality is available easily in Windows: A shortcut with the URL following VLC's executable path will automatically open the stream. I cannot think of any clever way to recreate this functionality in Android. Does anyone have insight to a workaround for this?

Latest nightlies also have a list of most recently used MRLs.

Thanks! As much as I like using Fdroid as my package manager I think I'll start checking out the nightlies.

Hi!

I had that same problem (but I wanted to hear R4, not R1).

What I did, as a workaround, was to download the playlist from the link and save it somewhere in my phone's memory. Then, using a file browser (I've used ES File Explorer) I've located the file, tapped on it and asked it to be open by VLC Media Player. The stream will not start right away, but you can go to the "History" page and the playlist will be there: tap it and the stream will start playing. I found this much easier that copying/pasting the link.

The only difference is that I've downloaded the ".pls" playlist (yours is here http://bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r1_aaclca.pls) instead of the ".asx" because it has a higher quality: the pls streams using AAC at 64kbps, whereas the asx streams using WMA at 32kbps (at least for me, listening from Brazil; maybe the data rates are different for those who are listening in the UK).

I didn't test with the "asx" playlist, but I think it should work the same.
