VLC 1.1.4 - Converting WMV to MP4 - What settings to use?

(I posted this in the wrong place earlier today, so if you are seeing this again as a new post that is why)

Please note I did video editing in school many years ago, but I have been trying to teach myself how to use computers in the current way to do many things when I have time. Please dumb it down for me.

I had trouble using VSDC Free Video Editor, until I have time to sit down and figure that program out, I have been using Windows Movie Maker . It is fine for what I need to do right now, which is upload a video to a blog this weekend. I did it before, I have no idea how. http://joannakarczmarek.wordpress.com/2 ... rst-draft/

So the result this time two years later, is a video with no sound, so I am obviously messing up some settings somewhere. I went to https://wiki.videolan.org/Transcode_WM_to_Mov_or_MP4/ but my vlc doesn't work/look that way. I have been looking but for some reason can't find what I am looking for, if anyone can point me in the right direction would be great. I did search this site but I could not find my issues, if someone knows this was addressed already please post the link, if I find my issue I will delete this post.

What I am looking for are some reccomended settings.

#1. Should I upgrade my vlc? My vlc uses a convert/save option under Media. I don't seem to have an option to make the audio mp3 (currently set for h.264 + acc)

#2. The settings for bit rate, frame rate, and res are all set at zero. What does having these values set as zero do? (I have a list from dailymotion that they reccomend, should i change all this to match? if the video is 4:3 does that make the ratio 1.3?) The video portion turned out fine.

#3. There are options: Video, Keep Origional Video, Audio, Keep Origional Audio, what combo should I use?

#4 I have no idea what settings to use for the audio bit rate channel or sample rate. Trying to figure out how many channels my wmv file/origional has to see if that is the problem, currently set for two channel.

For VLC issues, open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start conversion, and the message dialog should complain if something bad happens.

I don't know much, but I know I want to know how to properly make a video, can't you see what your help means to me...

I am unable to understand the code/log posted above. Does debug indicate an error?

Have I posted this in the wrong spot again? My question is general, but I am talking about a windows generated file. I am not sure if the settings I am seeking are specific to windows.

I am aware that I need to be patient and I will be, I am a volunteer too, just checking if I have put this in the wrong spot and so not getting a reply.

Recommended Settings:

Convert
>Profile Video - H.264 + ACC (MP4)
>select Deinterlace

(next settings are accessed by clicking the tool button next to profile setting)

Encapsulation
>MP4/MOV

Video Codec
>select video
>deselect keep orgional video track
>all other values set to zero

Audio Codec
>select audio
>deselect keep orgional sound track
>Codec - mp3
>Channels - 2 (if you recorded with one mic (non-stereo mic) you may need to select one)
>Bitrate and Sample Rate to match those of file being converting (right click properties, details)


On my third try I deselecting keep origional sound track, and that gave the video sound, however there were a high pitched alien sounds. I than selected deinterlace and MP3 audio codec and the video was fine, as was recommened in the second link I posted. The interface looks different but these two setting changes seemed to fix the problem.

I arrived at a video that was satisfactory on my fifth try, and did not go back and try every combo to see if one single thing was the fix or if it was a combination of settings.

This worked for me, I filmed my original footage on a PowerShot G12 wich records in stereo (has two mics) and produces a Quick Time file (.mov). I than clipped the footage in Windows Movie Maker. I saved it as a 640x480 file. I converted the wmv file in VLC, by clicking Media - convert/save, opening the file and clicking the convert/save button at the bottom of the open media window which opens the convert window.

I did get frustrated and tried the VSDC free video editor again, I however do not find this program to be intuitive as it claims to be, and also got p-o'd with statements that "no-one wants to learn the nuances of film editing". I did not try using the new VLC to clip the video and save it.
