Difficulty Recording/Converting DVDs

Hello, perhaps someone can help me with this?

I am using windows 8, and cannot get DVDs on my computer with VLC. The record function only records the audio for the DVD, not the picture. Using save/convert only records the picture, and not the audio (and does it in very poor quality to boot).

How do I get either of these functions to work properly?
