Problems streamingh behind a home router

Postby Rod » 04 Apr 2014 21:20

Hello All,

I am just trying to get started with streaming with VLC. The ultimate goal is to get my brother, who lives in another country, to broadcast some TV programs to me (only) and vice versa, I would like to stream my TV to him.

I am just starting by trying to braodcast a video file from my home to my friend's home in the same city where we live. I have not been able to do this.

We both have PCs, we are both running Windows 7. Does the video file need to be in a certain format to be broadcasted? mpg, avi, mp4, etc.? I believe I am streaming correctly and that I have set up the port forwarding correctly by forwarding http to 192.168.2.237.

However when I try to open the stream from my friend's house it gives me the following message:

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'http://86.XX.XXX.XX:8080'. Check the log for details.

I have read guides like this: http://www.ehow.com/how_12168516_use-vl ... twork.html

I don't seem to be getting past this - can anyone help or refer me to a step-by-step guide?

I am getting frustrated but I know it can be done :-)

Thank you

Wow, no replies, ever. Either the forum sucks, you people suck or the software sucks.
Not sure which one it is, in any case - screw them all! :-)

Dude, there is a thread on here that kinda answers the problem you maybe having.

I'm using the push stream method. I enable port forwarding at each end for the port and protocol I want to use. Then just enter the destination IP and the chosen port in the stream destination settings. I use RTP as it uses UDP protocol and has given me a lot of success for audio only application. But I have shared my desktop with myself via the internet using my public IP address.

You can use transcoding to get a format you like and a bitrate that works with the bandwidth available.

Have a look at this link:

It's where I started
