Problem with Beta version...

Postby Rick Hollingsworth » 14 Oct 2005 13:28

I have just started using the VLC program and it is perfect for our needs...

In testing the beta release I have found a problem with the display aspect ratio....

Now that it has been added to the program, I am unable to specify the window width and heigth... It ignores any value placed in that location... and always displays the same size window...

There is a need to select whether or not you want the aspect ratio used...

Can anyone help?

Sure, but this may take some time. Additionally "Problem with Beta version..." isn't a very self-explaining title, so some of the answering people might just skip it because doesn't pop in their eyes (no idea whether one can use this metaphore in English ;) ). Something like "Problem with display aspect ratio" would be better, because one can clearly see now, whether one can say something to that issue or not.

Anyway, concerning your issue: The display aspect ratio option sets the aspect ratio of your screen. This can be useful if you're using a 16:9 display. This option doesn't influence the size or shape of your video-output-windows. That's why it is actually called "Monitor aspect ratio".
You should use the "Source aspect ratio" option to solve your problem, if I understood it correctly, that your file(s) is/are encoded with a wrong aspect ratio and you want them to be shown correctly.

The problem I am referring to works in the previous release...

You could specify a window size, ie 1024x768... and it would begin with that size window...

In the beta release, these values are ignored and the starting window size is static, unless you specify "full screen"... this causes two problems... 1) in "full screen mode" an original window flashes and then goes to full screen... 2) you cannot resize the window to an appropriate size when only utilizing a portion of the screen for video and a portion for another application...

It seems to be locked to the display aspect ratio... and thus the forced display aspect ration should be an option, not a requirement....

One other thing

I have tried changing the source aspect ration... once again the window size variables are ignored...
