[RESOLVED] VLC doesn't play files over network

Postby kosta » 09 Jun 2014 22:21

Hello,

I am completely and utterly dumbfounded! I simply cannot find the reason for this behavior.
I have had VLC installed for a long time now and been able to playback files of any sort. Suddenely, without any to me known changes, I cannot playback files any more on my computer from the network. Playing locally on this computer does work however! Also, I have tested from another computer, a laptop, same network share with VLC, and it's playing too!

So, it's not a share, and it's not the router, as the laptop is playing it back. To my knowledge, all firewalls are turned off too.

I tried creating the log, but for some reason, it also doesn't do that. Verbosity was -1, but I set it to 2. Still no LOG created. I also completely reinstalled VLC, including cleaning preferences.

The error is:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file://nas/Movies-New/Kosta.mov'. Check the log for details.

I can access shares without any problem, I can mount them, I can read/write them, all as usual.
Both computers are connected to the same switch, running by a single cable to the router, on which NAS is connected.
I also tried giving this computer an IP of the laptop, to rule out any settings I might have missed, however still no luck.
The only other test that comes to mind is a Windows reinstall, to see if it's up to that.

Why is VLC on the other computer working as usual without an issue and on my other computer, I get this error. I simply can't wrap my head around it!!

EDIT, I managed to get the Message to display:

main debug: adding item `Kosta.avi' ( file://nas/Movies-New/Kosta.avi )

Well, after 6 hours of painstaking searching, I may have found at least a partial answer:

On my NAS, if I set "Enable SMB 2.0 and Large MTU", VLC can't play the files. And if I uncheck that, it plays them.
However, the Laptop doesn't care what I have set here, plays them in both cases.

My OS is Windows 7 x64 in on both computers.

I already checked to set Jumbo Frames on my NIC to on, however that didn't help. On my laptop, in the NIC settings, there is no Jumbo Frames setting. Also, it's quite an old laptop.

Any ideas why this is causing problems? I would actually like to have SMB 2.0 and Large MTU enabled, however I still have to check the performance in both cases.

And finally: success!

Enabling Jumbo Frames on the Router (5K) and on my NIC (5K), including setting the thing on the NAS, now I can use Jumbo Frames and the playback is working too.

Phew. A needle in the haystack. Maybe this pops up for someone in the future when searching.
