Having trouble capturing audio

I can capture video from my cable box using the VLC capture device, but not audio. Error message says "type not supported". Is there anything I can try to capture the audio?

The paperwork that came with the box describes it as a "Cisco CHS 435HDC High-Definition Set-Top with Multi-Stream CableCARD (M-Card) Interface". It is pretty low-tech. I am using the connector cable that comes with the Dazzle DVD Recorder HD.

It is basically a little "box" that has RCA inputs for audio and video and connects to my laptop via a USB plug. Then I connect the cable box and the Dazzle box with the standard male to male RCA inputs - a left and right audio input and a video input. Hope this is clear.

How these three devices are connected to each other?
What does the DVD recorder?

You should describe your situation accurately and not always wait until a new question comes.

Sorry, I thought I answered your question. There is no DVD recorder. That is what the Dazzle setup was supposed to be for - to connect a DVD player to your laptop - but that is not how I am using it. I am using it to connect the cable box to my laptop.

The Dazzle box is between the cable box and the laptop. The cable between the Dazzle box and the cable box is male to male RCA plugs. And the cable between the Dazzle box and the laptop comes straight out of the Dazzle box and connects to the laptop via a USB plug.

I am calling it the "Dazzle box", but it just a little plastic thing that on one side has inputs for audio and video and on the other side has a cable coming out that connects into a USB port on my laptop.

- The analog output signal from your CS 435 HDC receiver goes through a 3-wire RCA cables to the Dazzle DVD Recorder.
- From there, the output signal of the CS 435 HDC receiver go via a USB cable to your laptop.
- You think your Dazzle DVD Recorder is only a adapter from an analog video signal (RCA cable) to a digital video signal (USB cable).

That can not work.

As far as I know, your understanding of the situation is correct. It does work with some other applications, but not perfectly. So I think you are basically correct. I am going to have to find another way to resolve this issue. In the past, I have used an Osprey 210 video card with a desktop computer, and that worked well. I guess I am going to have to get a desktop and go from there. Thanks for your help.

I want to pursue this just a bit further. Under the setup mentioned above, Media Player Classic, Expression Encoder and VirtualDub all pick up both video and audio from the cable box. But VLC player picks up video only, no audio. Why is that? Isn't there some adjustment one could make to VLC player to make it work like the others do?

I open VLC player. Then I click on "Media". Then I click on "Open Capture Device". Then I click on the "Capture Device" tab. Then under "Video device name" I select "Dazzle Video Capture USB Video Device". Then under "Audio device name" I select "Line (Dazzle Video Capture USB". Then I click on "Play". I can see the video from the cable box, but no audio. There is an error message as follows: "The device you selected cannot be used, because its type is not supported."

I had said earlier that my current "Dazzle" setup works with other applications, but "not perfectly". The"not perfectly" was referring specifically to Virtual Dub. I had been having problems with the sound - sometimes it would get really slow or have a strange "warping" of the sound. Virtual Dub has some "Timing" settings that deal with the synching of the audio with the video. Yesterday I posted this issue to a Virtual Dub forum and was told to check the box that says do no synch and uncheck everything else. This seems to have resolved the issue of the slow or warping sound.

So I now feel the "Dazzle" setup is actually working OK, and therefore, I would like to clear up this one last remaining issue - the inability to capture the cable box audio on the VLC player. I hope you can continue to help me with this. Thanks very much.

I'm sorry, that was with the video to check with MediaInfo a mistake on my part. But you can the check the video stream via Tools - Codec Information. Is here an audio stream displayed?

Do the following before you click "Play":

Open with Tools - Messages the dialog messages.
Enter for Verbosity 2 (debug).
Let's open this dialog.
Now click on Play.
When the video is playing, click Stop.
Save the log data from the Messages dialog to a file.
Post the details here.
