Apple Remote - Mac OS 10.9.3 - VLC Player 2.1.4

Postby vkd » 16 May 2014 18:12

Hi, I hope you are well.

I have an Apple iMac 27" May 2011 model, running Mac OS 10.9 and VLC Player 2.1.4. I have an Apple Remote.

I was using Mac OS 10.9.2 and recently upgraded to 10.9.3.

The Apple Remote works perfectly with XBMC media player.

The Apple Remote used to work perfectly with VLC Player, however now it does not function. I have successfully paired the remote to the computer within the OS, which was validated by the on-screen icon indicating so, but still it will not work within VLC Player. I have eliminated VLC Player completely using AppZapper and downloaded and installed a new copy but no joy. I have set and reset the Preferences to "Control system volume with the Apple Remote" and "Control system volume with the Apple Remote" but neither work in practice. I can, however control VLC Player using the keyboard media keys or alternatively the preset hotkeys.

I dearly would like this functionality back. Please help.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Seems like I found a solution. What I've done is stopped XBMC from starting using the remote 'Menu' button, then I started iTunes - which I never use - to check if the remote would work with it. It did, so then I started a video in VLC Player and the remote worked, whilst iTunes was open. So I quit everything and started VLC Player again without iTunes running and the Apple Remote continues working with it. So, great, problem resolved. I am documenting all this as it may help someone else in the future.

Thanks.

Latest observation:
The functional behaviour stops if the system is restarted. iTunes must again be started and quit to restore Apple Remote functionality within VLC Player. However, XBMC continues to work correctly with Apple Remote independent of iTunes having been run or not. Therefore this seems to be a bug in VLC Player - please fix.

...Be nice to see a post on this thread from the Admin acknowledging the bug & saying that it'll get fixed in the next release.

We tried this with all our Macs with IR-receivers running Mavericks and we failed to reproduce this problem :/
