VLC iOS 2.3 crashes router when attempting to find UPNP

Postby Zenki » 20 Apr 2014 06:06

After launching VLC and opening the sidebar when Local Network is tapped wireless is reset on my ipod touch and my router performs a reboot (all devices on network loose connection while network resets). Even after the network has restarted VLC cannot find any UPNP storage devices and continues to cause my network to reset every 10-20 seconds.

This issue only has begun since the 2.3.0 update to VLC, I have tested media streaming using other PC's as well as a Samsung Blu-Ray player which can access my NAS device without issue or network disruption. I have tested accessing the NAS as well through other iOS apps and have not had the same issue as when attempting to use VLC.

My router is a D-link DIR-655 v.A2 using the latest firmware revision of 1.37, NAS is a WD MyBook Live 2TB which utilizes the Twonky Media server (even if the Twonky server is disabled the network is reset when VLC attempts to access). As mentioned this issue did not occur in the previous version of VLC for iOS and I was able to access/stream files on the network without issue.

Thanks for the report! I'll try my best to reproduce this. However, it will probably be hard because I'm not aware of anyone close to me using a D-Link router..

I can confirm the same issue with exactly the same router hardware and firmware version. I am using an Ubuntu box with minidlna as the server, but even with that turned off, the network is still reset when searching for servers in VLC. The same problem does not appear to exist with other networks.

Hello, I just thought I'd like to chime in.

D-Link DIR-655 hardware revision A4, using initially firmware 1.35NA and updated to 1.37NA where the issue remains.

Attempting to access Plex Media Server via VLC for iOS 2.3.0 fails. Server disappears from list in-app; all computers on the network lose connectivity; router displays start-up "gauging your internet connection" message.

Happens without fail. Attempted looking at PMS, but all visited potential solutions on that end turned up nothing, mainly regarding server GDM, DLNA broadcasting, and port forwarding. On discovery of this thread it seems very likely to be a VLC issue. Have been able to use the app without issue for months since first using this iOS device (iPad Air), and the problem has only started happening very recently, probably after updating VLC.

Have never had this problem under any circumstance with many years of experience with this router. Very hopeful of a quick resolution.

Cheers

I just want to confirm this behaviour.
D-link DIR-655, Fw 1.31EU
iOS 7.1.1 (iPad model MD788KS/A)
VLC for iOS 2.3.0
No idea what's happening, the router's logs say nothing to me.
From other replies it seems obvious upgrading FW on the router is no use.

Is there a bug report filed?

*edit*
DLNA/UPnP server is XBMC Gotham on Ubuntu 13.10

Nothing found on http://forums.dlink.com I have not had the possibility to post this there, as I'm awaiting approval by D-links forum admins.
Maybe someone with an approved D-link login could start a thread over there?

Also confirming.

My basic setup:
Modem: Motorola SB6141
Router: D-Link DIR-655 vA4 running firmware 1.37 (tried 1.32-1.37 with same results)

LAN: 2 Windows machines (Server 2008 R2 and other Windows 8.1)
WAN: iPad 3 (iOS 7.1.1)

Media Server Software: PS3 Media Server, Plex Media Server (both on Windows 8.1 machine)

VLC for iOS v. 2.3.0

Whenever I launch VLC for iOS and choose the 'Local Network' menu option, all my LAN connected PCs completely lose network connectivity. Connectivity is restored in about 20 seconds. I can cause it again by either trying to refresh the available server list or closing and re-launching the app completely.

In the Windows System event log I get standard messages during a disconnect (browser has forced an election on the network and name resolutions timing out due to DNS servers not responding). I have checked my router logs and there are no error, warning, or informational entries logged during this time.

I have tried, with no luck, all sorts of different router settings thinking that it might help. I noticed in an older forum post the mentioning of Bonjour being used so I went ahead and installed iTunes (I know, I'm grasping at straws). No luck.

If you need any more information, I will gladly provide it.

I'll try to reach out to D-Link to see if I can get my hands on a testing device.

Was just curious if you have been able to make any progress on this issue. Is there anything we can do to assist?

My attempts to reach out to D-Link were not successful so far, so if you have a contact there, I'd be very interested!

Sorry to revive such an ancient thread, but I was wondering if anyone can confirm whether the current version of VLC for iOS still has this problem or is fixed?

Thanks
