VLC problem in playing videos from Galaxy S5 phone?

Postby Tigerwolf » 07 May 2014 21:15

Hi there! :)

My partner recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone, and we've discovered that, regardless of format (MP4 or 3GP), when a video is sent as an e-mail attachment, it absolutely refuses to play, no matter if played from the e-mail, or played as a download on the PC itself. Nor will it play on Windows Media Player, it seems, so it's clearly not just a problem with VLC.

My guess is, the phone being so new, it's using some new kind of compression for the HD video that VLC has no codec for? But I'd value insight and input from anyone who might be able to offer a way to bypass this. I've tried convert/save, no joy, and even using another program to change the format, but that program couldn't "find" the video either!

Anyway with this phone being so new, I figured no-one might know about this issue yet, so thought my post might prove useful. Thanks for listening. :)

Hi there!
Same problem here.
I found following: if videos are copied directly to SD card, they can be played then in Galaxy S5.
But if i copy them to same SD card when it is located in the phone (conecting cable to phone, for example),
VLC (or other player) cannot play them... S5 is modifying videos somehow...
really something with "new stuff", codec or something in S5...

some Ideas?

Found: Galaxy S5 is restricted in playing many video files.... due to codec issue, some videos will not be transferred and played by Galaxy S5.

May be This article will help:

Thank you for your comments Gigan, but unfortunately in my case, the article didn't help, because my problem is the reverse to the one described. It isn't that I'm trying to upload a video format TO a Samsung Galaxy S5 which won't play, but rather, the videos recorded ON an S5 by it's video camera, simply won't play on VLC, regardless of how they're recorded format wise (MP4, 3GP, high res, low res, it makes no difference... none will play on VLC).

This means if someone records a video on an S5, and e-mails it, it simply won't play on a PC using either Windows Media Player or VLC, because neither seem to recognize the video as actually being playable. VLC (if I put it in repeat mode) has no timer, and loads no image. Yet checking the properties of the video, show it's recorded in MP4 (or 3GP) with the file size showing it's actual existence.

I still think it's a Codec issue. But until someone comes up with a solution, it seems there's no way to view any video recorded on an S5! :?

Cracked it, I think. I didnt realise there was a problem with S5 Video until I tried to play items on my PC with VLC. But prior to that I converted S5 video to a DVD and bingo it plays on a DVD player. Best I can do,
