You should only have to uninstall the driver associated with the DVD. The driver should be installed automatically upon restart.

Okay, but how do I tell which driver is associated with the DVD? I assume you don't mean the driver for the actual DVD/CD drive, but one of hte IDE ATA/ATAPI controller drivers, but I have two primary IDE channels, 2 secondary IDE channels, and 2 Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controllers (I doubt it's those last two.) listed under the IDE header and I don't see any descriptions that say anything as simple as "DVD" in their properties. Sorry to be so dense about this.
Thanks again for your help.

I don't know which IDE drive it would be on your system, but the one that current xfer rate indicates DMA Moed 2 should be the DVD drive. Other than that I'm afraid I can't give you any more info about the problem. If you do determine you DVD drive, remember to restart twice. It worked for me and I hope you resolve your problem too.

I don't know if this information helps, but Windows Media Player and Real Player are both giving digital copyright protection errors on DVDs (they won't launch and the code is 0xC00D1163). This started around the same time as the stuttering in VLC. This leaves only PowerDVD working.
Maybe some help can be found here:

I tried uninstalling the IDE drivers with no luck. They automatically reinstalled, but after rebooting twice the audio still stutters.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks.

In answer to VLC_Help's question:
Copying a VOB file to the desktop and running it produces the same stuttering as running from the DVD drive.

In response to Lotesdelere:
I didn't have any luck with the suggestions there. I don't appear to be able to identify the presence of any of the problem files listed. I'm not clear on the video settings part since this is a laptop and it's just set to the built in monitor.

Again, I appreciate all the help!

Okay, it's working now.

After upgrading my DVD drive firmware, reinstalling both the drive and IDE drivers, updating my audio driver, resetting VLC to default settings, and reverting from version 0.8.6i to version 0.8.6h without any luck, I tried reverting to version 0.8.6f and checking the option to delete preferences and cache. That worked, and when I reinstalled version 0.8.6i it kept working. I still don't know what helped since I can't find any difference in the audio settings.

I also don't know what caused the problem in the first place. It seemed to coincide with my installation of XP SP3, I restored that out of the settings so I really don't know what happened. It was also around the time I installed 0.8.6i, but reverting to 0.8.6h didn't help either so I'm still unable to explain this.

I still get errors trying to use WMP for DVDs, but I'd rather use VLC anyway.

Thanks again for all the help.

all is fine, until i go with menus on.
XP SP3, Intel Core Duo T2060 1.60GHz, 1GB RAM. VLC 2.1.3

Oh last post 2008... hmmm ?

got a USB DVD Drive, that works!

hay? i found this.
"had this problem. I checked the XP device manager and under the advanced tab of the IDE channel for
the dvd drive, it said 'dma if available' and below it 'pio mode' and no way to change it--this is a problem.
I uninstalled the secondary IDE channel, then rebooted twice as XP reinstalled the drivers.
Now the IDE channel for the DVD drive says 'dma mode 2'--this is normal.
DVD's now play without stuttering audio."

cool i fixed it!, and now i hope that i can help others.
