VLC on IOS 7.1 subtitles doesn't work anymore

Postby Anthan » 20 Apr 2014 13:41

I've got a couple of .m4v movies on my iPad Mini Retina. In the tool bar I can choose the subtitle language as always, but recently there are not displayed on screen . . . .

Are you using version 2.3 of VLC for iOS?

Hi,

I'm in Finland and can confirm the subtitle problem. It has come up with this latest update, no problems before. VLC finds the sub tracks normally and lets me choose which one I want to use, but displays none of these. I have tried with a few movies, including ones I have succesfully watched on VLD iOS before, with subs.

Most of my movies are .mp4, processed with HandBrake, and there have been absolutely no subtitle issues before this. I've been a happy VLC iOS user and I'm sure you'll fix this in no time :)

Cheers!

Are those external subtitles or subs internal to the media you guys are playing? If it's external, what's the file format used?

Internal here too, applies to mp4s created from my dvds and tv recordings. In the latter case the it's a originally a DVB subtitle which in the conversion process first becomes a .sup file and then finally Handbrake does with it whatever it does when it makes the mp4.

Thanks!

Ok, so this only about bitmap subtitles, not text subtitles. I'll try to reproduce this later today.

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

Hello again,

I just tried to reproduce this with DVB bitmap subtitles and plain-text. Both are being rendered correctly for me.

Can one of you share a small sample with me on http://streams.videolan.org/upload so we can check what's wrong? This server is private, so only core developers will have access to whatever you upload.

Thanks!

Hello Felix,

Thanks for picking this up! I can take a 60-sec sample from a dvd rip and a tv broadcast recording. Would that do?

Cheers!

Hello Felix,

I just uploaded an 88-second clip of Goodbye Lenin, with Finnish subs. The filename is GoodbyeLenin_sample.mp4. This was taken from a recording of the film's Finnish TV broadcast, so the subs were originally DVB, then .sup.

I'll upload a clip from a DVD rip in a little while, so you can check if different sources matter in this case.

Thanks :)

Hello again Felix,

The 90-second DVD sample is now uploaded as well. The file title is Rosemary_sample.mp4 and the clip has Finnish subs.

Thanks!
