libav ffmpeg

Hello,

I've been learning about open source ever since i found out about vlc a couple of years back. as i understand it [correct me if i'm wrong,] vlc uses libav. but here's the thing, apparently, from what i've read, there has been a feud over ffmpeg vs libav where libav accepts nothing from the ffmpeg project. so how then are the changelogs for both practically identical? does ffmpeg use libav? do developers work on both projects?
