Navigating a still gallery on a dvd problem

I'm having the same issue rlslemmer had a couple of years ago. Nobody seemed to have a solution then.

I cannot navigate through some still galleries on DVDs. Instructions on the DVD screen say to use the next (>>|) and previous (|<<) buttons on my remote control. I don't have a remote since I am playing the DVD on my computer. None of the buttons on the on-screen VLC controller work. The next/prev media takes me out of the gallery and back to the main menu. Next/prev chapter/title buttons do nothing. The only button on the start page of the gallery is the return to main menu.

There are no chapters for each still and the arrow buttons on my keyboard do not work. Pressing the "n" button takes me out of the still menu back to a blank screen with the VLC cone/logo in the middle.

Any ideas on how to get this to function?
