autoconfigure link for downloading to vlc

Postby Baresark » 02 Apr 2014 22:22

Hey everyone,

This is my first post here, so if it's short on info, let me know.

Here is the situation. We use iPads as an enterprise solution at work. We are trying to disseminate three videos to the field. iOs is not good for this, of course. We are playing with using VLC, it's actually a very good solution. The ability to download the videos to the device is invaluable, as streaming is not an option for the field.

We use another proprietary app for another project. To configure it we send a link that only opens into that application. If it's not installed, it doesn't show up as a link.

I was wondering if there is a way to make a link that effectively does that same thing, but for VLC. I would need it to automatically open into the VLC player and put the download link into the download section of VLC player. This is for a team of people who are not tech savvy. If push comes to shove, I would just make some instructions for them to follow, but the fear is the amount of support that would be necessary to get them all to have the videos in question.

Thanks for your time. If something I said didn't make sense, I apologize. I'm using my phone to post this as our ip is blacklisted for whatever reason.

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback! Your post totally makes sense.

The link you mentioned does kind of already exist: if you'd do vlc://server.com/path/to/file.avi, VLC would automatically open and play the file. Same for vlc://http://url.

However, it will only play, it won't download. I created ticket 11147 on our feature request and bug tracker, so we don't forget about it.

I'll definitely add it, but it's too late for the next update because all user-visible strings are frozen. It will be part of the subsequent release, which should be out in 4 to 6 weeks from now.

That is amazing. I wasn't expecting that at all. I look forward to the next release and keep up your amazing work.

You are welcome! We listen very closely to enterprise needs with regard to VLC and if it's something as simple as that, we are happy to help :)

Hi Felix,

I read ticket 11147 (below). I see the ticket is marked closed. Was this feature ever implemented and, if so, what is the syntax for the download link?

Thanks!

This ticket is scheduled for the forthcoming 2.4 release of VLC, which was not released so far. It should be within the next 3 to 4 weeks from now.
