How can I mix the audio track down to mono in the new VLC?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

How can I mix the audio track down to mono in the new VLC?

For instance, say there's a 5.1 audio track. By pressing shift+A I could cycle through mono, stereo, 5.1, and a couple others. That doesn't work now in VLC 2.1.3.

Tools > Preferences > Show settings = All > Audio \ Output modules \ DirectX: Speaker configuration [Mono]
Save changes, restart VLC.
Then there is audio filter:
Tools > Preferences > Show settings = All > Audio \ Filters: [v] Audio filter for stereo to mono conversion
Tools > Preferences > Show settings = All > Audio \ Filters \ Mono
