Sound doesn't follow HDMI to TV

Postby jnojr » 22 Feb 2014 01:26

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop that dual-boots Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 It works like a peach under Windows. Under Linux, though, when I drag VLC to an external TV connected via HDMI, the sound still plays from the laptop. I poked around in Tools, Preferences but nothing jumped out. Any solutions?

Audio, Audio Devices is greyed out, even while video is playing.

But now the sound is coming from the TV, so never mind! :-)

If your internal audio output card drives both HDMI and analog audio outputs, you need to configure the audio card profile to HDMI in the OS. This is outside the scope of VLC.

Typically, HDMI audio is driven by a different chip on the graphic card though. Then you need to select HDMI in VLC from Audio / Audio Devices.
