VLC 2.1 convert/save not working

Postby Sonevar » 18 Oct 2013 15:21

Using version 2.0.5 to 2.0.8 I could successfully convert a video file from one type to another... the file save menu would show all available extension types even after I selected a specific file conversion. However after installing version 2.1 when trying to convert files, regardless of which conversion type I choose .mp4 .asf etc. the conversion only saves the audio portion and leaves out the video (greatly reducing the file size) additionally the save menu only shows the extension I chose instead of all available types as before, unknown if that's relevant. Additionally VLC 2.1 would often (but not always) crash when starting a convert/save or trying to open a converted file after which, even trying to open VLC normally would cause it to crash before opening and could only be accessed by clicking on a "clean" file to initiate autoplay with VLC. Upon returning to 2.0.8 I could convert video properly again, if I reinstall 2.1, conversion problem returns.
(Possibly Unrelated, I originally tried to install 2.1 to resolve Firefox plugin issue/bug/clerical error. When I check for updates from 2.0.8 Check menu it says I have latest version)

What is your source file ?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the conversion, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

I reinstalled 2.1.0 set the message verbosity to 2 (debug) but when it crashed all it did was tell me it had crashed and would I like to send a report. If any log was created where would I see it?

On a whim I decided to check the video settings to see if the video track was disabled but the entire video menu was grayed out. The originals of the files I'm trying to convert play correctly in VLC 2.1.0 as do all other video files including those that were converted using 2.0.8

Hi I just faced the same issue trying to convert an MP4 file into an MP3 file. I just upgraded to the most current version and conversion worked great before. What I did and I am happy to share to help others is I went and downloaded version 2.0.5 of the VLC player. When I installed that it uninstalled the current version and went back to the previous version. Now conversion works fine. Hope that helps :D

Same for Reinstalling 2.0.8 the conversion problem doesn't happen there either

First, reset VLC preferences:
http://wiki.videolan.org/Reset_prefs

How to get to a MS-DOS prompt:
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chdos.htm

Then run VLC with this command line:

Code: Select all

vlc --extraintf=logger --verbose=2 --logfile=C:\vlc.log --logmode=text --file-logging
You may have to change the path to the destination file for a location folder where you're allowed to write in.
Start your conversion then post the full resulting log.

seems that the problem doesn't exist in 2.1.1

Correction, after 2 successful conversions of different file types the problem resurfaced in 2.1.1 did full uninstall/reinstall (including delete cache/pref) problem persists switching back to 2.0.8 since it works

Re: VLC 2.1 convert/save not working

Postby Stratagem » 25 Nov 2013 14:51

VLC v2.1.0 or v2.1.1 running on Windows 7:

Source file: http://a1408.g.akamai.net/5/1408/1388/2 ... od.m4v.zip
(taken from bug#9200 discussion)
Steps to re-create issue:
  1. Use GUI.
  2. Convert / Save...
  3. Use source file above (I've been using 3gp sources that lack audio in v2.0.x without issue, then encountered this starting with v2.1.0)
  4. Create a new profile for conversions
  5. The profile should have:
    Encapsulation tab: MP4/MOV selected
Video codec tab: Video - checked, Keep original video track - checked
    Audio codec tab: Nothing checked
    Subtitles tab: Nothing checked
  6. Select the new profile and Start.
This profile should mux the original video track and no audio into an MP4 container. It does so in v1.1.x and v2.0.x. It only creates a header(?? 203 bytes) in v2.1.x.

Correction, after 2 successful conversions of different file types the problem resurfaced in 2.1.1 did full uninstall/reinstall (including delete cache/pref) problem persists switching back to 2.0.8 since it works
I seem to be having the same problem.

I had not been using VLC 2.0.x on my WIN 7 PC because of continuous crashing upon start up. It would not run no matter what version I used. Version 2.1.1 was released and I decided to try my luck. I installed version 2.1.1 on 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1/AMD Athlon II X4 - 2.9 GHz/ATI Radeon HD 4200 - 256MB. All went well ... VLC launched without crashing. It seemed to be okay. I loaded a .wtv file and it played. I chose to Convert / Save the file as an MP4 file. My first attempt resulted in video but no audio. I made some adjustments and my second, third and fourth attempt were successful; all having video and audio. Today I am trying to do the same conversion and I am getting audio but no video. The only thing I changed was turning on the "De-interlace" option. I thought maybe that was somehow causing the video to not convert and turned it off, but that did not fix the problem.

2.1.2 sould be better on this. We have many fixes for 2.2.0 too.

News flash 2.1.2 is even worse... it keeps trying to save everything as .raw (which cannot be changed) and simply crashes as soon as you try to start the process, going back to 2.0.8... again

I confirm that this VLC 2.1.2 converter does not work anymore, whereas 2.0.X versions did. I tried to convert a MTS file to AVI, which I successfully did many times before . The source came directly from a Sony Camrecorder copied to the hard disk. The verbosed log file message is this one if this can help :

main warning: trying to send non-dated packet to stream output! (3000 times)

The full log file is :

2.1.3 same problem, can only convert to *.raw regardless of input type entered or output type chosen.... reloading 2.0.8 again

Re: VLC 2.1 convert/save not working

I ended up here after searching for a solution to the same problem. (btw, do people really use a command line interface with VLC? I mean, if that works for you, great, but you expect us to revert to that because a feature is broken? - /endrant)

SPOILER: I got it to work. But its buggy, and there doesn't seem to be a way to process a batch of files.

I've been using VLC for about 10 years. Subtle (and not so subtle) changes to the functionality and the interface throw me now and again, so I, at first, chalked this problem up to that, but it was worse. Your mileage may be similar.

Condition: attempting to convert flac (and MP4) to mp3 - no MP3 output option could be invoked.

Symptoms: as the above posters, I was unable to get the save/convert function to output to MP3 when attempting a file conversion, but with some minor difference(s). specifically, I could obtain a conversion, but only to MP4s. While MP3 was listed in a couple of profiles, selecting those profiles either would only produce MP4's or .MPEG-TS. I couldn't' find, or force it to convert to MP3.

Additionally - creating, editing, or copy/modifying a conversion profile to convert to MP3 would not work. In all cases, it defaulted to a TS conversion, even if I specified the proper extension during the profile creation. I also attempted to convert to MP4 (getting rather desperate), which seemed to work - if you wanted an audio only MP4 (which wouldn't work in WMP). The issue seemed to be that there was no selection for MP3 audio in the video section which is the first screen you encounter during save/convert session. There was no way to "unselect" the radio button - so it appeared to be stuck giving you a MP4 or whatever it was set at, even though I had un-selected all options on the video tab, and had specified MP3 conversion on the audio tab. General context of how I got to that point - whether with no playlist, or with a series, or even selecting the source file from the playlist - none of anything I could think to do would invoke an MP3 output - period.

So...
I updated to the latest ver from one just a couple months older. No joy.

I reinstalled. Same - no joy.

I uninstalled completely, then reinstalled after confirming no settings remained in the VLC program folder. At this point, after installing again "new", the option to save/convert to an output for MP3 appeared, and after testing on several conversions, it is working! Mostly.

I had one failure to work with the same symptoms as before the reinstall: it reverted to trying to save as a .TS. I discovered that it would exhibit this issue if I was trying to convert a file in the playlist by right clicking and save/convert through the context menu there. (yeah, I'm thinking, "oh crap, it's broke again"). But if I invoke save/convert from the main media pull down menu, it works and MP3s are again available. It was the same symptom I'd first seen - no MP3 choice as a destination in the drop-down, and the radio button on the opening page was already selected and there appears to be no "unselect" option for that button. I also played with the way that "worked", where, from the root media drop down, I invoke and got this same page but without a radio button pre-selected on opening. If I select a button at this point, you cannot unselected it, and the resulting output seems to be stuck on whatever video format that's there. (I figured I was taking a chance and from then on, a selection would be present on opening that page no matter how it was invoked, but thankfully, accessing save/convert from the root media drop down and the MP3 option was back. There's probably a context issue with the menus that won't allow an MP3 convert option if...???... my testing wasn't so exhaustive to discover what the anomaly (or programming condition) actually is, but it's damn confusing as the exactly when or why it does this.

SECONDARY ISSUE
On another note, that may or may not be related... The ability to conduct a batch operation of converting several files at once or from the playlist seems broken as well. In ALL cases attempted, it always prompts for an out-going file name, and I could not find a way through any convention I'm familiar with to coax a batch conversion process - whether loading a folder, or compiling a list of files in the playlist and trying to convert all - it always needs the filename populated manually - it only processes one file at a time. It strikes me these two issues may be related.

While the first issue (no MP3 output format) seems to be dependant on the context of where you are in the program, or how you get there (context), I could not determine that the second issue (no batch operation) would work at all. Sure, I may be missing the "context" that makes it work, but hey, what's the point of making menu options and the functions they invoke available if you really have to get there from a different screen or operation to begin with. I'm inclinded to think, rather strongly, that this is an error and not the intent of the authors.

Just to be absolutely clear here - when I've stated above that I got it to work, it was from the main menu "MEDIA" drop down, I mean, specifically, that this is the starting point which invoked got me to the operation that worked. So... "MEDIA" (dropdown), "convert/save", "Open Media" dialog box opens, "add" a source file, "convert/save", "Convert" dialog opens up, select "audio MP3" from the drop down, confirm destination path and manually type in a filename, hit "start", and you're off.

Wow, that's a heck of a lot of steps, not to mention the default path opens every time, and you have to manually type (or at least paste) in a filename for output,

Ok, after writing that (and experiencing the stuff before that), I cannot make it fail. It pulls up the conversion for MP3 every time now. I can't find a situation/context where it won't give me an MP3 output option after starting a conversion from - anywhere. I can't even replicate the failures I had AFTER reinstalling. Well, considering how many steps it takes to get to a file converted an MP3 and there seems to be no batch function, it's probably time to find another app. it's a pity, I love VLC (otherwise).

FINAL Observations: While is seems possible, if not likely, that my app had some corruption or error with respect to the context (I can't see anything in the version changelogs that would directly affect these issues), It seems like there some more work to do to hammer out the conversion functionality.

PS: Wow, that's a long post. Sorry for the length. Aside from my wordiness, I wanted to document this issue as I found it, for both those looking to make it work, and those who might be interested in fixing it. 'hope it helps some.

Better? You mean the batch conversion works?

'could you elaborate some?

- It looks like the version above, 2.1.3 is mostly working as long as you don't try using batch process/conversion.

- where's 2.2.0 hiding? latest ver on all download links I could find is still 2.1.3. (we're talking Windows ver here, right?)

thanks JBK

Re: VLC 2.1 convert/save not working SOLVED

Postby Funken » 16 Feb 2014 12:55

I had the convert/save not working after VLC 2.0.8 on win7 x64. After reading this thread, I found that when Tools>Messages>Verbosity is set to 1, convert/save works.

The work-around is set verbosity to 1. To do this automatically, each time VLC is started, add --verbose=1 to the command line. I did it in a shortcut. This is my command line: "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --verbose=1

I also tried deleting %AppData% VLC and the Start>All Programs>VLC>...reset settings, but the dependable work-around is verbose=1. The convert/save failure did not produce an error message. It seems that verbose=1 may introduce a delay in execution?

Many thanks to the VLC team for the nice work!

Just tried to Update to 2.1.3 again (from vlc help menu), converter seems to work now (4 successful tests so far) it even shows the right container/extension when saving the file type instead of locking it into *.RAW. I'm confused as to why it's working now when it didn't a few months ago... aside from Windows updates, I've made no major changes to my system between the 2 attempts at getting 2.1.3 to convert

I'm noticing that because the new interface forces the file extension on the convert/save, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to convert to a proper audio format. All of the audio converters are encapsulated as RAW except mp3 (mp4) which forces .mp4 This worked fine in 2.0.8 since you could manually type in your own file extension but in 2.1.3 it dumps out everything as RAW or MP4 which cannot be read by anything but vlc (including programs like Audacity that read raw) in order to get an audio conversion to mp3 I had to covert using .WAV encapsulation and then use Audacity to export as .mp3

With the correct profile settings will be converted to MP3 or other audio formats.
As an extension 'RAW' is used.

Here is an excerpt from MediaInfo for a converted MP4 to MP3 file:

Code: Select all

Allgemein Vollständiger Name : D:\VLC\Test.raw Format : MPEG Audio Dateigröße : 8,17 MiB Dauer : 8min 55s Modus der Gesamtbitrate : konstant Gesamte Bitrate : 128 Kbps verwendete Encoder-Bibliothek : LAME3.99.5 Audio Format : MPEG Audio Format-Version : Version 1 Format-Profil : Layer 3 Format_Settings_Mode : Joint stereo Dauer : 8min 56s Bitraten-Modus : konstant Bitrate : 128 Kbps Kanäle : 2 Kanäle Samplingrate : 44,1 KHz Stream-Größe : 8,17 MiB (100%) verwendete Encoder-Bibliothek : LAME3.99.5
You just have to rename the converted files to MP3.

Hi
Are there newer posts on this subject? Is there a solution?
I'm trying to convert .MTS to .MP4. I'm using ver 2.1.3.
I've seen that someone else gets a 1.2kb file which is not playable. I have tried setting Verbosity to 1 or 2, but no log is created.
Please help if possible... thanks.
