VLC Player won't allow me to skip forward in video clips

I do not understand this but as of the last 2 days, anytime I try to fast forward or skip to a place within a video, the VLC Player freezes up and won't start playing the video from the newly selected spot in the clip??
This is highly frustrating because it makes the fast forward feature useless now, and my only option is to increase the speed of the video in order to get to the part I want to see.... I have checked the updates, and I have the most recent version of the player, but I was hoping that someone here could explain this to me PLEASE!!
Do I need to go back and install an older version of the player, or what??
