VLC not displaying subtitles

Postby surf122 » 22 Jul 2012 23:21

VLC used to show subtitles but not anymore, went through settings and nothing seems amiss subtitles show enabled and can be selected from drop down in video in the menu. Movies play fine on Perian/Quicktime with subtitles and other players, but not VLC??

Please provide more information of file format, VLC version, Mac model, etc

A quick thing to try is removing the preference files for VLC.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

A quick thing to try is removing the preference files for VLC.
Macbook Pro - OS/X 10.5.8
VLC - 2.0.3
File Format - all files from avi to mkv etc, videos with subtitles play fine on Perian/Quicktime, same file in VLC doesn't show subtitles.

ok now it works, no idea what happened but I did was click reset preferences and now it works, but looking at the preference files for subtitles/OSD it looks exactly the same.... so no idea what changed. Least it works now.

Thank you surf122!

Problem:
No subtitles appear when playing MKV files in VLC for MacOS, version 2.1.1 or 2.1.2.

Solution (as mentioned above by surf122):
VLC -> Preferences -> Reset All

Just a quick note;

Had the same issue. Resolved after I reset all of my preferences as well. But there is a particular setting that I think is probably relevant. To fix the "building font cache" dialog box issue, I had changed the TEXT RENDERING MODULE to DUMMY FONT. Changing it back to DEFAULT seemed to fix the issue. So that may be a fix.

Alternative Solution:
VLC -> Preferences -> Video (under all settings) -> Subtitles/OSD -> Change "Text render module" to "Default"
