No audio at all

I'm running the VLC media player on Ubuntu Linux, the problem I'm having is it doesn't seem to be able to open audio device /dev/dsp. I was attempting to open a network stream (MMS if i remember) but there was no sound, this is the contents of messages (until i clicked stop) the main error is in bold type

Any idea on what might be wrong, as /dev/dsp does exist on my system and all OSS audio drivers for my sound card (C-Media CMI 8738) are installed. I'm using version 0.8.1 of the VLC media player. hope you can answer my question and solve my problem

go to the pref and select esd as audio output module
