update and keep ALL preferences

Postby cybmole » 14 Jul 2012 20:19

will there ever be a non-geeky solution for this ?

I recently went from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 and again had to delve into windows backups to get my hot keys & on-screen controls back to how I want them

other programs manage this easily - why does vlc have such as issue with preserving/re-applying user settings when the core program is upgraded ?

expecting users to know how to back up & restore a hidden app-data folder is hardly state-of-the-art ???

also - there is no way to install & keep previous file associations -if you use vlc only for certain file types ( as I do ) then it becomes an extreme memory challenge to set them as-is - one-by-one, manually during the the install dialogue

why can't I just tick a box called - use previous settings ???

I never lost my settings across upgrades. As long as vlcrc is left intact, it just works.

anything you have changed via the customise interface option is lost, for sure.

I am also pretty sure that so are any changes made to hot keys - they revert to defaults & have to be done again.

what is needed is an UPGRADE option, which does not ask you about file associations, or cache, or preferences , or removing previous version, but just gets on with updating the installed core program, keeping everything else as-is. many other programs have that feature.

Hotkeys are stored in vlcrc. They don't get lost across upgrades, unless you uninstall or reset the preferences during the upgrade.

but interface settings stored in app data ... vlc-qt-interface.ini ARE destroyed when updating - an option to keep that file unchanged would be useful

Have the same problem on various windows versions (Vista, 7, 8 ): Each time I update VLC wants to take over all file associations, even though I have "keep settings" ticked. I would like to keep playing my audio files with WinAMP :D

Use 2.1.2 and later.

Use 2.1.2 and later.

why - what has changed ?

- & why is it impossible to find a list of "what 's changed" on the downloads page ?

It's not impossible. And the upgrade system is better in 2.1.2 to keep vlcrc preferences. Moreover saving hotkeys has been fixed/changed.

It's not impossible. .....
well here I am on the home page videolan.org

I see links to" download" & to "features," but NO LINK to what's new or what's changed or to version history. no such links on the download page either.

so if this info does exist, where have you hidden the link to it ?

surely normal design it to put a link to what's new/ changelog NEXT TO the download link

NB I've not jsut beign awkward, I don't want to upgrade in order to fix one bug but then acquire 3 new ones, and a scan of recent threads suggest a LOT OF issues with windows & the 2.1 series ( I have 2.0.7 & it is very stable)
