Will you please FIX the damn subtitle encoding finaly?

Hi, i don´t know why you messed with things like this, but since VLC V.2 went out, enconding for latin languages with special symbols is total crap! Everytime i download subtitles i have to manually insert proper enconding 1250 or utf 8 to see proper subtitles. Why is it? In VLC V.1 and all other mediplayers i dont have to choose anything and subtitles always works properly. Obviously, in VLC 1 it was OK, now it´s not.. why won´t you change it ?


It seems like easy thing to do, but if you watch 10 subtitles per day and you need manually change every one of them, it sucks like hell after a few months..

CP1250 is Russian, not Latin... The default for Latin languages is CP1252 or UTF-8. So basically you are not making any sense.

My bad, missunderstood "latin" because of diferent meaning in my language.. well i´m from czech republic, so russian is my "group" of slavic languages, that´s why i mentioned 1250.. But the point is, that i often download and translate subtitles myself and everytime i also need to manually change encoding since version two went out..

As i said, i didn´t have to deal with this with version 1 and i dont have to deal with this with MPC,KM and other multimedia programs.. but i don´t wanna switch !! So why is it in new version so complicated? It is suposed to auto locate encoding like previous version one did.. It´s all over the internet, people complaining about this.. everyone just advises how to fix it by changing encode manually but nobody tells how to fix it permanently

Cyrillic is CP1251: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows-1251

Well OK, CP1250 is not cyrillic, but it's not the normally used Latin-derived languages and nor Latin proper.

And the reason why it broke in VLC 2.1 is because there is a fool in the VLC Czech localization team that, for some mindboggindly idiotic reason that I ignore, decided to switch the default charset from CP1250 to CP1252 for the Czech language.

So that means what? That i should just use default 1252 windows (works atm)? Cause western europe 1252 doesn´t work properly either.. (with same subs)

Haven´t really tried default for long time, i was just switching 1250 and utf8 recently. But i´m sure there had to be a reason to switch from the default at the first place..

No you need to select CP1250 because the Czech localization team screwed things up.

Well and back at the begining, i do have 1250 always, but sometimes it doesn´t work properly and i need to switch to utf8 to avoid "???!!!" etc..

Then I do not quite understand your problem. What version of VLC do you use?
UTF-8 subtitles are detected automatically by default, so you do not need to switch to UTF-8 in VLC preferences. There is the only problem with subtitles in VLC-2.0.x: if you load more subtitles in VLC, both types UTF-8 and ANSI, ANSI ones are not decoded properly. This behaviour has been fixed in VLC-2.1.x.
