VLC + Mavericks = no Open GL?

Postby hobbesdream » 25 Oct 2013 12:45

I was running VLC 2.0.8 on OS 10.8 and all was smooth.

Then I update to Mavericks (10.9)

I start having errors with most every video I open (have only tried mkv and avi so far) regarding "Open GL is not supported on your Mac: Your Mac lacks Quartz Extreme acceleration..." yet the videos still seem to run fine..."hmmm, I definitely have Open GL, oh well" I thought. I do some digging though because it was getting annoying and realize there is a 64bit VLC 2.1.0!
Cool...except not.

Same issue...

Any ideas? I've cleared preferences, submitted bug reports and tried restarting...no luck.

This is the only application that seems to have issues with Mavericks.

for interested parties:
Mac Pro (mid 2010)
2x2.4ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (Westmere)
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB
6GB Memory

Awesome player btw, love you guys for making it!

This is a OSX bug in their driver.

@hobbesdream: so the 10.9.1 update didn't help?

unfortunately no, still happens.

I've also tried more video file formats and they all seem to cause the error as well.
Fortunately everything plays just fine, is there some way I could just hide that dialog box?
It's really only annoying, nothing serious.

edit: Just tried deleting preferences...still happening

Was this issue ever solved?
I have VKC 2.1.2. (64bit) on both an Imac & Mac Air.
Both using Mavericks.

VLC worked like a charm always. Very happy with it. Thx!
And still does great as long as I don't hook a beamer onto the MacAir when I show videos

It then gives the same error message as mentioned here;
"OpenGL acceleration is not supported on your Mac
Your Mac lacks Quartz Extreme acceleration, which is required for video
output. It will still work, but much slower and with possibly unexpected
results"

The video seems to play fine on the beamer, but the error messages with each video are a nuisance.
Especially when I am projecting with big audiences and each time have to stop and remove the error window.
It would be great to be able to prevent them from showing as there does not really seem to be a real error occurring.

I appreciate any advice anyone could give to fix this.

Try switching user accounts. When I did, there was no longer an Open GL error message while opening files....

Hi Jonathan: you mean the account in term of log in on the apple as user? (Because I do not have a specific account logged in on VLC, or do I?)
H.

I'm having the same problem - but it only happens with VLC, not with other players such as Quicktime or MPEG Streamclip.

I have tried the various suggestions made in this forum but to no avail.

I am using an iMac (mid-2007) with 2.4 Ghz Intel core 2 duo processor with 4GB RAM running OS 10.9.1 Mavericks. Graphics are ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB. I have updated to VLC 2.1.3.

The problem first appeared quite recently - some time after, but not immediately after installing Mavericks. The only other recent change to my IMac has been addition of extra RAM: 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, which matches the original installed RAM.

This is the message that appears:
OpenGL acceleration is not supported on your Mac
Your Mac lacks Quartz Extreme acceleration, which is required for video output. It will still work, but much slower and with possibly unexpected results.

In fact the video output does not appear to be adversely affected - unless something is happening that I haven't noticed. Which makes the warning messages all the more perplexing.

if i wasn't clear in my original post it only happens with VLC for me too.

the other user fix doesn't seem to work for me either.

Exactly the same problem here. 2.1.3 VLC on MacBook Pro, Mavericks OS X 10.9.1

"OpenGL not supported..." error message did not appear until after an update to Mavericks.

The error message are driving me crazy -- no discernible problem with playback of many different kinds of files. Different user account on the mac doesn't help.

Thanks for any help.

I posted a question on Apple support and got this reply:

"The OpenGL version is dependent on video hardware, not OS version. I think VLC is assuming otherwise and reporting that error when it finds Mavericks with OpenGL 3.3 instead of OpenGL 4.1."

Which is a bit out of my depth - but perhaps someone can explain whether this info is of any practical help to us?

Yes, the files play ok. You just have to keeping clearing all the error messages, which is a chore.

Have you tried deleting the vlc preferences? There are a bunch of them. The folder is invisible, so to do so, go to the Finder, and in the Go menu, select Go to Folder... and enter ~/Library. You can then open the preferences folder, scroll down to org.videolan.vlc and you should find three or more of them. Deleting them helped last time I had a problem. It goes without saying that your preferences will be reset if you do this.

Thanks, but deleting preferences doesn't work. You say you had a problem: was it the same one as described here, or something different?

If you are affected by this issue: Do you use multiple monitors? Do you use a device with multiple graphics cards?
