I have a fresh install of Windows 8, 64-bit version. I downloaded the 64-bit version of VLC (from /pub/videolan/vlc/last/win64/).
This studders and crashes within Windows 8.
So I downloaded and tried the 32-bit version of VLC 2.1.0 and it plays everything fine.
Has the 64-bit been tested in Windows 8? Is anybody running this successfully?

Posts like this (hope you get an answer soon!) make me nervous---I'm about to get a new Win8 64 bit computer, and wanted to download VLC 64 bit to install on the new baby when it comes. But there is no installer. I found the link (not very intuitive) to the 64 bit files, but instead of a nice simple installer, I was faced with an ftp list of files. Guessing that the plain 64 bit windows 7z file (not debugging) was what I wanted (why no instructions?) I d/l'd that, but unzipping just showed a bunch of files---no setup. Do I just copy this over with an actual installation?
And what about the main question---is this really working in Win8 64 bit? Should I install the 32 bit version, which does have an installer? I'm trying to keep most of the programs on the new baby 64 bit, since that's where this is going anyway. Any suggestions?

Hecatedoe- That is exactly what I downloaded (using the link link to the FTP folder). The fact that they make the 64bit version sort of hidden leads me to believe it's not thoroughly tested.
I don't mind the zip packages because I know exatly what files are getting installed on the system and where.
In Windows 8 64-bit, the 64-bit programs are usually installed into the "Program Files" folder and the 32-bit ones go into "Program Files (x86)"
So I just created a vlc folder in "Program Files" and extracted the 64-bit files into that folder. Then I just created a shortcut on the desktop to the executable on and ran it.
Massive stuttering occurred when I tried to play a basic mp4 video.
When I did the same install with the 32 bit version (using the zip package and putting files into "Program Files (x86)" everything worked fine.
BTW- I'm just using the nVidia drivers installed when I installed Windows 8. Haven't loaded any other codecs or splitters or anything.
