Will VLC convert .mp4 files to .AVI?

I downloaded VLC just for that purpose but I can't find any instructions on how to do it. I've clicked on media, selected convert/save, browsed to a file and selected it, provided a name with .avi extension, hit convert, and it just draws a blue bar across the bottom like it was doing something, but I can't find that anything has been done.

I'm thinking this program is either completely lame, or I'm just expecting something of it that it's not designed to do.

Can anyone help, or if this isn't the program for me, recommend one that is?

Follow the wizard, you also need to select an encoding profile, for instance "Video - MPEG4 + MP3 (AVI)".

But it might be easier to use a dedicated tool such as AviDemux.
