Drawing SUBPICs outside of video region

For my next plugin, I need to draw graphics outside of video area. How I should think about it, especially when it comes to video cropping / aspect ratio?

By design, subpictures cannot be rendered outside the video. So far the only way to render outside the video, is to render outside of (Lib)VLC.
