How to open network stream with VLC iOS?

Postby Anjan30 » 14 Aug 2013 00:57

What am I supposed to enter in the address field of VLC iOS "Open Network Stream" feature? After I start a stream from my Mac osX, I open netwok stream on my iPad and give it the IP address of the Mac from which I am streaming, then briefly I see the video player screen on my iPad, but then it quits saying something like "play failed ..." Am I supposed to include any specific port number as part of the IP address that I enter for open network stream on my iPad?

I can not find any clear documentation anywhere outlining 1) How to initiate a stream from Mac; 2) Then how to receive the stream on iPad. I have tried streaming .MOV file as well as .MP4 file from Mac using UDP unicast, UDP/RTP unicast, and HTTP - they all start stream ok from Mac, but I cannot receive (play) on iPad. There are no network connectivity issues, I can ping, file transfer, etc. between Mac and iPad. I can even use the Web Share feature on Mac, and stream videos from Mac's web using Safari browser on iPad.

Eventualy I would like to use live streaming (passive streaming) from DVD player on my Mac to my iPad directly without riping DVD to a file first. This should be possible right?

I got it to work partialy by entering rtp://@:1234 in the address field of "Open network stream" in VLC iOS. I receive video stream, but no sound. I have to play around more with settings and see if I can get the sound to work also. I must say that the UI for VLC iOS is disgustingly horrific - no "help", no "wizzards", no "hints", nothing. It may even be "buggy". The video occasionaly freezes; most of the time it will resume automaticaly, but often it will freeze and crash. And if during play I hit the "pause" button, it becomes a permanent pause - the only way I can get out is by aborting the app with the home button on the iPad. As I have indicated in my original message I do not think there is any network issues as I can play video on demand by using my Mac's web server and Safari browsers on iPad, iPhone, etc. I can simultaneously play 2 different videos on 2 different devices - iPad, and iPhone - both videos being streamed from my Mac. This is really cool, but I am struggling to make VLC iOS work properly on my iPad. Any help from the community?

Hi,

I just wondered how you had got on, and what streaming method you are using, i have tried several from VLC on PC to VLC on iOS. There are 2 RTP streams available in the latest version of VLC and I'm not sure which to use.

Also please can you confirm that you entered rtp://@:1234 on iOS as opposed to rtp://192.168.1.1:1234

Also have you made any further improvements?

Thanks
